My Sit-Down with Mover Smitty | Ay Mama!

The Imagination Movers are coming back to Chicago (Waukegan to be exact) on Saturday, October 20th for their 2012 Rock-O-Matic Tour.? My family has experienced both of their Chicago shows (in 2009 and 2011) and they were amazing.??????????

As many of you know from my past articles, ?I Like My Kids' TV Show" and ?Moved By The Movers?, Cooper and Cole are big fans of the Imagination Movers.? And I must confess that I have become a fan as well.

Here is a quick background on the band??

The Imagination Movers are four guys who saw a need for kid?s entertainment.? They started playing at backyard parties ten years ago, and now play hundreds of sold out shows across North America.?? They also have a TV show on Disney Junior and have written hundreds of songs featured on multiple CDs.?

I am also very impressed with the resilience of this local New Orleans band.? Three of Movers lost their homes during Hurricane Katrina, and the last one was a firefighter who went missing during a Katrina rescue effort. They all rebuilt their lives and stayed focused on their collective dream...to create rock music that both parents and children could enjoy together.??

So when I got the chance to sit down with one of the Movers for this interview, I jumped at the chance.? So here is my sit-down with Imagination Mover Smitty.

Lisa:??So how is the tour going?

Smitty:? The tour is a lot of fun.? It?s great to meet our fans who have supported us over the years.? It is a different concept than our past tours.? We are playing many of the songs from our new CD/DVD Rock-O-Matic and some of the favorites from past CDs.? There is a great mix for everyone?our loyal longtime fansAND families who are coming to see us for the first time.? Plus, we have a secret guest that will appeal to the kids.? He is a 7ft. robot that Mover Dave made.? The kids love it!

Lisa:? That sounds very cool.? Coop and Cole will love it.? Speaking of love, we all think the new Rock-O-Matic CD is great.? It?s interesting, the songs seemed to have matured compared to you previous CDs like ?In A Big Warehouse? and ?Juice Box Heroes?.? Is that on purpose??

Smitty:? No.? Our process for writing songs is very organic.? At any moment, if an idea or melody hits one of us, the process starts.? Previously when we were taping the TV show, we actually got song writing homework so to speak.? If we were doing an episode about a certain topic like say pirates, we would need to write a song about that to fit into the episode.? Now we can get back to writing songs like we did when we first started?just when it hits us.? The other thing is that most of the other guys? kids are growing up so what we are writing about is naturally aligning to where we are in our lives right now.? But it?s interesting; we have written so many songs over the years that some of them are just coming around.? Like the song Little Red Wagon; that?s a song we wrote in 2004, but it is now on our new 2012 Rock-O-Matic CD.? Or the song Rain Rain.? That is a song Mover Scott wrote at an outdoor concert we were doing during a rain storm.? It was pouring out and he just started singing that song.? It?s cool.? Ideas for songs just come.? That?s the fun part.

Lisa:??What do you prefer touring or the taping the TV show????

Smitty:??They both have their benefits and challenges.? When we were taping the TV show, it was great to be home.? Also, being able to work with a local New Orleans crew and keep jobs in our city was important to all of us.? However, the days were long working on the TV show.? 14-16 hour days were the norm and we had to do a lot during a typical day from writing songs, to creating show ideas to the on-camera work, but the energy on set was great. It was a tremendous experience and offered us some amazing creative freedom?it was a true gift.? Being on the road touring can be hard since we are away from home.? However, getting the chance to play in front of a live audience is great.? Talk about energy.? And getting the chance to meet the kids and watch them sing and dance with us is awesome.?

Lisa:? You guys have great chemistry.? I know you are all friends, but what makes it work?

Smitty:? We are all friends first and foremost and we have history together like Scott and I went to high school together.? We truly like to be around each other.??? It helps that we are older and more settled in our lives.? We love what we do and the fact that four friends get to do this amazing work is very cool.? We will not let anything get to us.?

Lisa:? Any funny stories to share from this tour????

Smitty:? Not really.? The last tour bus driver we had said we were boring.? Either we are watching a movie, reading, sleeping or catching up with our families.? I guess one thing happened recently that was pretty funny.? One of our tech guys got locked in the bathroom right before a show, and we needed him to do the show.? No one from the venue could get him out so we had to call the fire department to get the door open.? We had to explain to the crowd why we could not start the show on time.?

Lisa:? What is a perfect day for Smitty?

Smitty:??A perfect day for Smitty?hmm.? I would get up early and take the boat out to go fishing.? Then I would come home, have lunch and maybe take a short nap.? Then I would take my dogs for a walk at the local neighborhood park.? I would finish the day with a cookout at home with friends.?

Lisa:? What is your favorite Movers song??

Smitty:? I really do like so many of our songs for so many different reasons.? If I had to narrow it down, I like ?Sunrise Sunset? and ?Rain Rain.? Of course, I like the ?Fire Truck? song and the song ?Dear Old Dad? holds special place to all of us.?

Lisa:? How about your favorite TV episode??

Smitty:? That?s easy?the pirate episode.??????

Lisa:? Thank you for your time.? What is one last thing you want people to know about the Imagination Movers??

Smitty:? We are four friends who are real guys from New Orleans and when we play our songs, we?re actually playing it.? We are playing real drums; real guitars and we love what we do.? Our show is for everyone and we are so grateful to the families who come to see us play.? We want the audience to have as good of time as we are and know that we are playing from the heart.?

I really want to thank Smitty for his time.? He spoke to me for about 45 minutes and was incredibly patient with my list of questions.? I learned that Smitty is still active in his firefighter career.? He actually utilizes his vacation time and trade shifts with others in the station to make time for the Imagination Movers.? I think that is very cool.??I also learned that Smitty recently shaved his head for the St. Baldrick?s Foundation, which is an organization that raises money to support finding a cure for children?s cancer.

I ask you to please check out the Imagination Movers? TV show on Disney Junior and go see them live in concert on October 20 in Waukegan, IL.? Check out their website at www.imaginationmovers.com.

So, How Much Do You Really Pay in Taxes? ? The GSCPA House ...

Written by: Colin Blalock, Chair GSCPA (The Pessimistic Optimist)

From May 15th to May 19th I was in Washington D.C. attending a conference celebrating the 125th Year Anniversary of the American Institute of CPAs (?AICPA?).? The AICPA is a longtime advocate of sound tax policy, transparency and simplification.? It is important for citizens to know that a tax exists, how is it imposed and when a tax law changes.? At the start of the conference it was announced that the AICPA has released a tax calculator that can be used by everyone. ?The following is almost verbatim from the AICPA announcement.

?Announcing the TOTAL TAX INSIGHTS CALCULATOR to help taxpayers better understand their estimated annual tax responsibilities.? The AICPA?s Total Tax Insights calculator is a one-of-a-kind online tool that links federal taxes with the country?s myriad state and local tax conventions? more than 20 types of the most widely applied taxes in all? to provide users with an approximation of their particular tax obligations.?

The calculator is customized for each state and designed for easy use.? It includes, for example, real estate taxes by county, school district taxes, federal and state cell phone taxes, federal and state gasoline taxes, and many more.? A simple online form asks the user for minimal information to get started.? It should be noted that none of the information is captured, retained, or used by anyone including the AICPA.? Once you have ?computed your tax? you can print the information and delete it from the computer.

The AICPA feels that there are a number of valuable insights for citizens, including:

  • Greater understanding of the number and variety of taxes they pay, and estimated amounts for each;
  • Increased awareness of the need for solid financial planning in order to make better-informed financial decisions;
  • Improved knowledge of the tax ramifications of changing jobs, making large purchases, deciding whether to buy or rent a home, and other pivotal actions.

Note that the Total Tax Insights calculator is not a tax preparation tool or a substitute for expert tax and financial advice of a trusted CPA.? However, it delivers a great deal of useful information with very little effort.

Visit www.totaltaxinsights.org and enter the information.? You will find it very interesting, useful and, as they say, insightful.

Mathematicians can conjure matter waves inside an invisible hat

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? Invisibility, once the subject of magic or legend, is slowly becoming reality. Over the past five years mathematicians and other scientists have been working on devices that enable invisibility cloaks -- perhaps not yet concealing Harry Potter, but at least shielding small objects from detection by microwaves or sound waves.

A University of Washington mathematician is part of an international team working to understand invisibility and extend its possible applications. The group has now devised an amplifier that can boost light, sound or other waves while hiding them inside an invisible container.

"You can isolate and magnify what you want to see, and make the rest invisible," said corresponding author Gunther Uhlmann, a UW mathematics professor. "You can amplify the waves tremendously. And although the wave has been magnified a lot, you still cannot see what is happening inside the container."

The findings are published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

As a first application, the researchers propose manipulating matter waves, which are the mathematical description of particles in quantum mechanics. The researchers envision building a quantum microscope that could capture quantum waves, the waves of the nanoworld. A quantum microscope could, for example, be used to monitor electronic processes on computer chips.

The authors dubbed their system "Schr?dinger's hat," referring to the famed Schr?dinger's cat in quantum mechanics. The name is also a nod to the ability to create something from what appears to be nothing.

"In some sense you are doing something magical, because it looks like a particle is being created. It's like pulling something out of your hat," Uhlmann said.

Matter waves inside the hat can also be shrunk, though Uhlmann notes that concealing very small objects "is not so interesting."

Uhlmann, who is on leave at the University of California, Irvine, has been working on invisibility with fellow mathematicians Allan Greenleaf at the University of Rochester, Yaroslav Kurylev at University College London in the U.K., and Matti Lassas at the University of Helsinki in Finland, all of whom are co-authors on the new paper.

The team helped develop the original mathematics to formulate cloaks, which must be realized using a class of engineered materials, dubbed metamaterials, that bend waves so that it appears as if there was no object in their path. The international team in 2007 devised wormholes in which waves disappear in one place and pop up somewhere else.

For this paper, they teamed up with co-author Ulf Leonhardt, a physicist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and author on one of the first papers on invisibility.

Recent progress suggests that a Schrodinger's hat could, in fact, be built for some types of waves.

"From the experimental point of view, I think the most exciting thing is how easy it seems to be to build materials for acoustic cloaking," Uhlmann said. Wavelengths for microwave, sound and quantum matter waves are longer than light or electromagnetic waves, making it easier to build the materials to cloak objects from observation using these phenomena.

"We hope that it's feasible, but in science you don't know until you do it," Uhlmann said. Now that the paper is published, they hope to find collaborators to build a prototype.

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation in the U.S., the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Royal Society in the U.K., and the Academy of Finland.

Wealth Transfers Worries - Temecula/Murrieta Estate Planning Blog

Younger members of ultra-wealthy households are grappling with their forebears for a say in wealth planning, and women are concerned about how money affects their relationships, the study found, after surveying 53 families with a net worth of $100 million or more earlier this year.?

Planning your wealth transfer can be complicated. While there are many elements to consider, forgetting the ?family factor? could be detrimental.

Obscure laws, politics, budgets, financial markets, returns, etc., are all important elements of wealth transfer. Unfortunately, for many planners, it?s a sad irony that they oftentimes overlook the true object of the process ? the inheritors. So, how do inheritors factor into planning?

Financial Planning magazine recently weighed in on this issue with an article titled, ?Younger Inheritors, Women Concerned About Pitfalls of Wealth.? The article featured the results of a new survey by Campden Wealth and Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management. This survey examined multiple generations within high-net worth families for their opinions on their family estates and their roles in planning for the future. The results are telling.

79% of next-generation inheritors responded that they wanted to be good stewards of the family wealth. In fact, they want more involvement in the finances. Although these respondents diverged regarding what they would do with the investments, most were enthusiastic.

It?s clear that families planning for wealth transfers should consider bringing the inheritors to the table sooner rather than later. The educational opportunity is profound when an interest is present.

Interestingly, 79% of female inheritors indicated concern over how the impact might affect them. They also expressed concern over potential mismanagement of wealth outside of their control. Education is certainly essential regardless of gender, but perhaps more so for females. Traditional stereotypes still remain relevant.

In either case, the biggest takeaway from the original article is this: today?s inheritors are eager for information and inclusion.

Whether your estate is monstrous or modest, when it comes to the ultimate inheritors, a little foreknowledge will go a long way toward ensuring the success of your wealth transfer.

Men, Women & Communication Breakdown - Business Networking ...

This blog is an excerpt from the book Business Networking and Sex (not what you think),?the book I co-authored with Frank De Raffele and Hazel Walker.? Enjoy!

Bill asks Candace out on a date. They have a great time. They then start to date regularly.

Six months later, while driving home from their dinner date Candace says, ?Do you realize that tonight is our sixth-month anniversary?? For a few seconds, there is silence in the car and to Candace it seems like deafening silence. She thinks to herself, I wonder if it bothers him that I said that. Maybe he?s been feeling confined by our relationship. Maybe he thinks I?m trying to push him into some kind of obligation that he doesn?t want, or isn?t sure of.

Meanwhile, Bill is thinking, Hmmm, six months.

Candace is percolating away in her head with, But, hey, I?m not so sure I want this kind of relationship, either. Sometimes I wish I had a little more space, so I?d have time to think about whether I really want us to keep going the way we are, moving steadily forward. Where are we going with this thing, anyway? Are we just going to keep seeing each other at this level of intimacy? Are we heading toward marriage? Children? An entire lifetime together? Am I ready for that level of commitment? Do I really even know this person?

At this point Bill is thinking, So that means it was . . . let?s see . . . February when we started going out, which was right after I had the car at the dealer?s, which means . . . lemme check the odometer . . . Whoa! I?m way overdue for an oil change!

Candace is now at the point where she?s thinking, He?s upset. I can see it on his face. Maybe I?m reading this completely wrong. Maybe he wants more from our relationship, more intimacy, more commitment. Maybe he?s sensed it, even before I did, that I had some reservations. Yes, I?ll bet that?s it. That?s why he?s so reluctant to say anything about his own feelings. He?s afraid of being rejected.

Bill is thinking, Yeah, and I?m gonna have them look at the transmission again. I don?t care what those morons say, it?s still not shifting right. And they better not try to blame it on the cold? weather this time. What cold weather? It?s 87 degrees out, and this thing is shifting like a garbage truck, and I paid those incompetent thieves $600.

Candace is thinking, He?s angry. And I don?t blame him. I?d be angry, too. I feel so guilty, putting him through this, but I can?t help the way I feel. I?m just not sure.

Bill is thinking, They?ll probably say it?s only a 90-day warranty. That?s exactly what they?re gonna say, the scum.

Candace is thinking, Maybe I?m just too idealistic, waiting for a knight to come riding up on his white horse when I?m sitting right next to a perfectly good person, a person I enjoy being with, truly do care about, and who seems to truly care about me. And now this person is in pain because of my self-centered, schoolgirl romantic fantasy.

Bill is thinking, Warranty? They want a warranty? I?ll give them a warranty. I?ll take their warranty and?

?Bill.? Candace says aloud.

?What?? answers Bill, startled.

?Please don?t torture yourself like this.? she says, her eyes beginning to brim with tears, ?Maybe I should never have. . . Oh, I feel so. . .?

She breaks down, sobbing.

?What?? Bill asks, wondering what just happened.

?I?m such a fool.? Candace sobs. ?I mean, I know there?s no knight. I really know that. It?s silly. There?s no knight, and there?s no horse.?

?There?s no horse?? says Bill and wonders, What horse?

?You think I?m a fool, don?t you?? Candace asks in self-blaming tone.

?No!? says Bill, thinking, Why should I?

?It?s just that . . . it?s that I . . . I need some time.? Candace says.

Dead silence again. Bill is trying to find what the right answer is here. Finally he comes up with one that he thinks might work.

?Yes,? he says.

Candace feels so touched that she puts her hand on his.

?Oh, Bill, do you really feel that way?? she says.

?What way?? says Bill, thinking, What are we talking about?

?That way about time?? asks Candace.

?Oh.? says Bill. ?Yes. Of course.?

Candace turns to face him and gazes deeply into his eyes, causing him to become very nervous about what she might say next, especially if it involves a horse. At last she speaks.

?Thank you, Bill.? she says, lovingly.

?Thank you.? says Bill, thinking, Whew. Got that one right.

Then he drops her off at her house where she lies and weeps on her bed, a conflicted, tortured soul, whereas Bill back at his place opens a bag of Doritos, turns on the TV, and immediately becomes deeply involved in a rerun of a tennis match between two Czechoslovakians he?s never heard of.

A tiny voice in the far recesses of his mind tells him that something major was going on back there in the car, but he?s pretty sure there is no way he would ever understand what, so he figures it?s better if he doesn?t think about it.

Candace?calls her closest friend and they talk about this situation for two hours. They analyze everything she said and everything he said, going over it many times, considering every word, expression, and gesture for nuances of meaning, and any possible ramifications. They?ll continue to discuss this subject, off and on, for weeks, maybe even months, never reaching any definite conclusions, but never getting bored with it, either.

Meanwhile, Bill,?as he plays?plays racquetball one day with a mutual friend of his and Candace?s stops before shooting a basket and says, ?Steve, did Candace ever own a horse??

Does this story have just a little ring of truth to it??It seems that often men and women communicate differently and define relationships differently.??

Do you agree or disagree?? I?d love for you to share an example in the comments section of a situation which has formed your opinion about the ways in which each gender communicates and defines relationships.

Keeping Your Geriatric Cat Healthy | The Purring Post

Cats, like their human counterparts, are prone to the aches, pains, and health issues that seem to come hand-in-hand with advancing age. Unfortunately, as the average lifespan of our cats increases, so does the chance that owners will see age-related issues arise in their senior cats.

As your cat begins to age, your veterinarian will likely start to recommend doing some tests to make certain your cat?s internal organs are functioning as they should. Cats have evolved to hide signs that they are feeling under the weather and these tests can let your veterinarian know that something is wrong with your cat, long before he displays outward signs of illness.

?I recommend that owners have yearly blood work done on their pets if the animal is healthy, and increase that frequency if any clinical signs present themselves or if abnormalities are seen in the blood work,? says Dr. Julie Byron, a small animal internist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana.

According to Dr. Byron, geriatric cat owners should also increase their awareness of how their cat is acting and feeling. It is important to be able to recognize what is normal for your cat so that when there is a change you can recognize it. She explains that a trip to the veterinarian is warranted if your cat is displaying any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Increased or decreased water intake and urination
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Failure to groom
  • Appearance of a growth or mass
  • Any changes in activity level or normal daily habits

Two of the most important tools that a veterinarian uses to start narrowing down the list of possible problems are an accurate history from the owner and a thorough physical exam. Bringing your pet in to the veterinarian is only the first step; it is important to share with your veterinarian any changes and symptoms your cat is displaying.

There are certain conditions that are more common in our elderly cats including renal (kidney) disease, gastrointestinal diseases, arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and neoplasia. With these conditions come certain signs and symptoms that, when seen by an owner or veterinarian, can lead to a quick diagnosis of the problem.

Renal disease is a common issue with senior cats. Subtle changes in your cat?s kidney function can be picked up on the recommended yearly blood work, before any outward symptoms have presented themselves. Since kidney problems often cause symptoms, such as increased water consumption and increased urination, if blood work is not done or if the problem develops rapidly before it can be caught on a routine blood panel, owners may notice they need to fill the water bowl more frequently or that the litter box needs to be emptied more often.

?Owners should understand that while kidney disease is usually a degenerative disease, it is not necessarily a death sentence for the pet,? advises Dr. Byron. ?There are medications and treatments on the market that can greatly increase the cat?s quality of life and delay the progression of the disease.?

An overactive thyroid gland, or hyperthyroidism, is another common problem in the aging cat population. If your cat has an overactive thyroid, you may notice that he is losing weight, even though his appetite may have increased dramatically, or that his sleep-wake cycle has changed. Hyperthyroidism in cats is both easy to diagnose and treat. Unfortunately, if the disease is left untreated or undiagnosed it can lead to cardiac disease, gastrointestinal problems, high blood pressure, blindness, and even death.

The one disease that every cat owner dreads hearing about is neoplasia. Unfortunately, it is a common problem in geriatric cats and is also one that can be incredibly difficult for a veterinarian to diagnose. According to Dr. Byron, it is the ability of cancer to mimic other diseases and include multiple organ systems that makes it so difficult to pinpoint on a diagnostic work-up. In order to diagnose neoplasia, your veterinarian may ask for extensive diagnostic testing, which is necessary in order to rule out and narrow down the list of possible differentials your pet?s symptoms and signs may point to.

While the necessary diagnostic tests can be expensive, if you are interested in pursuing further treatment for your pet, these tests are essential. Your animal?s prognosis and treatment strategy will vary greatly based on the results of these tests and whether a final diagnosis can be made.

Another common disease in aging pets is arthritis. According to Dr. Byron, arthritis in cats is under-diagnosed due to their ability to hide any signs of pain or discomfort. Signs of arthritis in cats can manifest in a variety of ways including decreases in activity level or ability/desire to jump, limping, weakness, and decrease in appetite. If you notice any of these signs do not medicate your pet with human over-the-counter drugs, as these can be very hard for your cat to metabolize and actually may damage their internal organs. There are newer veterinary medications that can be used safely in cats as a long term arthritis treatment that your veterinarian can prescribe.

?Above all, owners need to understand that age itself is not a disease,? explains Dr. Byron ?It just means that your pet has an increased likelihood of experiencing certain problems and illnesses. As veterinarians, we work to combat these problems and ensure that your pet has the best quality of life possible.?

UN panel blames Syria army for most abuses

A UN panel said on Thursday that government forces are to blame for most rights abuses in the latest violence sweeping Syria, as a watchdog reported renewed shelling of a rebel bastion.

Meanwhile, President Bashar al-Assad said Syria's government was capable of finding a way out of the crisis gripping his country, as he met with a visiting minister from main regional ally Iran.

"Syria has been able to overcome the pressures and threats it has faced for years and is able to get out of this crisis thanks to the strength of its people and commitment to unity and independence," Assad said, quoted by SANA state news agency.

His remarks during a meeting with Reza Taqipour, Iran's communications and information technology minister, came as parliament convened for the first time since elections.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Syrian National Council began searching for a new leader after Paris-based academic Burhan Ghalioun formally resigned.

In Geneva, the UN-appointed Commission of Inquiry on Syria said the army and security forces were behind the majority of serious abuses committed since March this year as they hunt down defectors and opponents.

"Most of the serious human rights violations documented by the Commission in this update were committed by the Syrian army and security services as part of military or search operations conducted in locations known for hosting defectors and/or armed persons, or perceived as supportive of anti-government armed groups," said the panel.

The commission, set up by the UN Human Rights Council, said "a clear pattern" had emerged of government blockades to "weed out" wanted people and their families, causing children to die for lack of adequate health care.

The report comes hot on the heels of accusations by Amnesty International that "the pattern and scale of state abuses may have constituted crimes against humanity."

The London-based rights watchdog denounced the UN Security Council for failing to refer Assad to the International Criminal Court as it had done with Libya's Moamer Kadhafi.

The allegations came as government forces pounded the rebel stronghold of Rastan, in central Syria, for an 11th consecutive day, killing at least three civilians, according to a Britain-based watchdog.

Violence elsewhere killed 10 people, including four summarily executed in Basamis, a town in Idlib province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, condemning it as a "contravention of international treaties."

Government forces have been trying to overrun Rastan since May 14. Rebel fighters from the battered central city of Homs regrouped in the town, which straddles the main highway linking Damascus to the north.

Elsewhere in the country, one civilian and soldier were killed in eastern Deir Ezzor province, according to the Observatory.

More than 12,600 people have been killed in Syria since a revolt against Assad's rule broke out in March 2011, including nearly 1,500 after a UN-backed truce took effect on April 12, says the Observatory.

On the political front, Ghalioun formally resigned late on Wednesday as the chairman of the Syrian National Council, an exile group some Western and Arab states have recognised as a "legitimate representative" of Syria's people.

The SNC "office decided to accept the resignation and to ask the council president to pursue his work until the election of a new president at a meeting on June 9-10", it said in a statement announcing his resignation.

The statement also said Syria's unwillingness to stick to a peace deal brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and the ongoing shelling and killing in the country were "a deliberate attempt to scupper the plan."

It called on "the international community to immediately act to adopt a new mechanism, through the Security Council, to force the Syrian regime to put an end to its crimes because as it is this regime only reacts to force".

Ghalioun announced on May 17 plans to step aside to avert divisions within the SNC after activists inside Syria accused him of monopolising power.

Meanwhile, SANA state news agency said Syria's 250-seat parliament met for the first time since May 7 elections to elect a speaker and swear in deputies, all but 41 of them new.

SANA said turnout in the election reached 51.26 percent out of 5,186,957 eligible voters, and that 30 women were elected to the People's Assembly.

It added the new members of parliament represented "all spectrums of society," without elaborating.

The regime of Assad, whose Baath party has ruled Syria unchallenged for decades, touted the elections as the first in a newly approved multi-party system.

The opposition says they boycotted both the election and a constitutional referendum, and the United States and other Western nations described them as a farce.

The US embassy in Beirut on Thursday warned Americans to be aware of prevailing tensions and violence in Lebanon, in an email to its citizens after deadly clashes in Syria's neighbour between pro- and anti-Damascus camps.

10 Ways Successful Entrepreneurs Delegate Tech-Related Tasks

Scott Gerber is the founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes youth entrepreneurship as a solution to unemployment and underemployment. Follow him @askgerber.

Naturally, entrepreneurs have an innate urge to want to tackle every part of every project themselves, but by trying to do so they can get tied up in tasks that limit their productivity and creativity. Especially when it comes to technical matters, outsourcing some of the work may not only be the best thing for the business owner, but it can also be the best thing for the business.

SEE ALSO: 12 Ways Businesses Can Prepare for Mobile Commerce

Of course, small-business owners shouldn?t outsource every tech-related item. To prevent miscommunication, lost time, and wasted investments, certain technical projects should remain in-house and become a new hire?s full-time gig.

I asked a panel of successful young entrepreneurs for their advice about delegating various tech jobs, including software development, apps, and website design. Here?s what they suggested about what to outsource and what to keep in-house.

1. Keep Most Competencies In-House

Keeping as many competencies as possible in-house gives us better quality and cost control, and allows us to be very nimble. For example, updates to our website, product photos, and layouts for our catalogs and advertisements are all done in-house. We call on outside specialists only for certain big projects, like a redesign of the website or complete software creation.

- Vanessa Nornberg, Metal Mafia

2. Delegate Small Projects

For more established businesses, beware of outsourcing all your web-development projects, especially because the code can be messy to work with later. Instead, only outsource small projects. This means that you limit your reliance on an outside firm, and you make sure that you can optimize resources so your own tech team isn?t overwhelmed with having to do every little thing.

- Danny Wong, Blank Label Group, Inc.

3. Let Others Handle Mobile Apps

If a mobile app is not a core part of your business but only a feature you?d like to provide to your customers, it?s an ideal tech job to outsource. Because of the breadth of platforms (iOS, Android, etc.) and the concrete, repeatable milestones of app development, reputable third-party providers have sprung up. These mobile-app development shops have the expertise to be successful in this type of arrangement.

- Doreen Bloch, Poshly Inc.

4. Contract Everything

You can outsource any tech work, if you?ve got excellent project specs and you set clear expectations for documentation and other details. But be aware that outsourcing may be more work than you expect. You need to create the documents to make sure that all your development work meets set expectations and follows similar style guidelines so that you don?t go crazy down the road trying to work with old code.

- Thursday Bram, Hyper Modern Consulting

5. Outsource Website Design

Outsourcing website design is very safe if you provide detailed instructions. We internally will develop a comprehensive treatment, which includes the emotional look and feel we want to convey, as well as the homepage content. We then have the designer go in phases, page by page. This provides great quality control and ensures timely deliverables.

- Raoul Davis, Ascendant Group

6. Delegate Motion Media

By hiring one or two employees, website design and digital could stay in-house. Motion media is something you usually need more frequently, so it?s better to outsource. We outsourced to Chimaeric and quickly learned that outsourcing motion media not only provides higher quality, but expands the capabilities of what you can do.

- John Hall, Digital Talent Agents

7. Keep Core Business In-House

If the job does not involve a core competency of your business, outsource it. If it is a core competency, hire excellent people and pay them what they?re worth.

Your priorities should always be treated as the contractor?s priorities. Make it worth everyone?s while.

- Brent Beshore, AdVentures

8. Delegate Straightforward Jobs

As a rule, we outsource jobs that are straightforward, because they don?t need intense supervision. Also, if the jobs are repetitive, they only need to be explained once.

Plus, if it is just a one-off project, we don?t want to bring someone onboard specifically to complete it.

- Nicolas Gremion, Paradise Publishers

9. Outsource to the Right People

Almost anything can be outsourced. However, don?t fall into the trap of hiring someone who says he/she can do some or all of the tasks you throw at them. If you need a PHP programmer, hire one. If you need a person to create a .PSD design for your website, hire a professional who?s done excellent site templates in that format. Always try to find a specialist, not a jack of all trades.

- Juha Liikala, webVehicle Oy

10. Invest in the Best Partners

Outsource to get the best, not to save money. Find the digital partner who brings the most value to the table and invest in a longstanding relationship. In addition to amazing design and technology, the best digital firms will add value to your business by providing big ideas. Don?t underestimate the worth of fresh, expert eyes that are invested in your success.

Stocks rally to erase steep losses

Stocks closed mixed Wednesday after a late rally erased steep losses. The Dow lost seven points to close at 12496

The Dow was down as much as 191 points earlier as the threat of a financial crisis spreading from Europe shook markets. The euro dropped to a nearly two-year low against the dollar, and oil prices sank to their lowest this year.

A late surge of buying erased nearly all of the Dow's deficit, leaving it down just 6.66 points at 12,496.15 by the end of the day. Other indexes ended slightly higher.

In the last hour of trading, news crossed that the leaders of France and Italy favored using region-wide bonds to support Europe's economy. That gave traders hope that a summit of European leaders might produce concrete steps to tackle the economic morass there. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned Tuesday that the 17 countries that use the euro risk falling into a "severe recession."

Analysts and investors have turned increasingly skeptical this month that European leaders will prevent Greece from dropping the euro or agree on ways to jump-start the region's economy. The Dow has lost 5 percent this month, nearly wiping away its gains for the year. It has risen only three days in May.

Plenty of good ideas to buttress Europe's financial system have been floated in recent weeks, said Paul Zemsky, global head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management. Eurobonds could be sold by countries in the currency union to raise money for bailouts and banks. Some have proposed insuring bank deposits across countries that use the euro, a program modeled on the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

"There are all these great ideas," Zemsky said. "But there's nothing yet. There's a lot of talk and no follow through."

Benchmark stock indexes dropped more than 2 percent in Germany and France and 3 percent in Spain and Italy.

The euro continued to fall against the dollar, reaching $1.25, the lowest since July 2010. Concerns about the stability of the European currency union if Greece leaves have knocked 5 percent off the euro this month. Yields on German government bunds fell as money shifted into low-risk investments.

If Greece exits, it could spread havoc throughout the global financial system. Bond traders could dump the bonds of Spain and Italy, sending their borrowing costs even higher. Banks in those countries could also be crippled if people start to yank money out of them, as has begun to happen in Greece.

"There's just a tremendous amount of 'what ifs'," Zemsky said. "If Greece leaves, I know equities are going to be a lot lower than they are today. It's not even close to being priced in yet."

Facebook rebounded 3 percent to $32 after getting pounded for two days following an initial public offering that was plagued with technical problems and has drawn scrutiny from regulators. The stock is still far below its initial price of $38.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.23 points to 1,318.86. The Nasdaq rose 11.04 points to 2,850.12.

Benchmark crude lost $1.95 to $89.90 in New York trading. Oil has plunged 15 percent in May as investors predict that the European economy will continue to slow.

The dollar rose and yields on U.S. government debt fell as traders shifted money into the protection of Treasurys. The yield on the 10-year note sank to 1.73 percent, close to a record low, from 1.77 percent late Tuesday.

The dollar and Treasurys often trade in tandem when anxiety hits markets. Traders from around the world sell foreign assets and then need to buy dollars before buying dollar-denominated U.S. Treasurys.

Europe's struggles come at a time when Asia is also slowing. China's economic growth fell to a nearly three-year low of 8.1 percent in the first quarter and factory output in April grew at its slowest pace since the 2008 crisis, raising the threat of job losses and possible political tensions.

A poor earnings report from Dell helped tug down other tech stocks, including Intel and Microsoft. Dell reported disappointing results after the market closed Tuesday and predicted weak sales for its second quarter. Dell dropped 17 percent.

Other stocks making big moves included:

? Google gained 1 percent following news that a federal jury ruled against Oracle in its patent-dispute case against the Internet search giant.

? Ford rose 2 percent, a day after the company won back its blue oval logo, factories and other assets that were pledged as collateral for a massive loan taken out last decade.

? Guess rose 6 percent after its first-quarter results beat Wall Street's expectations, and an analyst recommended that investors buy the stock.

Track the Toddlers: Their Impact on the 2028 Elections

For the first time, most of the babies born in the U.S. are members of minority groups, according to Census Bureau?numbers released on Thursday. The report is a harbinger of a future in which whites are no longer the majority of Americans.

Population estimates show that in 2011, 50.4 percent of children under 1 were Hispanic, black, Asian, or of another ethnic minority group, up from 49.5 percent in 2010.

What impact this change will have on politics and the national agenda is anyone?s guess. But in 2028, when many of those children will become eligible to vote for the first time, the lines at the polls will look different than they have at any time in U.S. history.

Five years before they head to the polls to vote in their first vote for president, the majority of children in the U.S. will be minorities, according to the census?data. The total population will follow suit in 2042. By 2050, non-Hispanic whites will be the minority, representing 46 percent of the population.

(Related: White Babies No Longer Majority: Census)

Some have speculated that the demographic shift will hand Democrats a political advantage.

That could happen, said Sean Trende, senior elections analyst for RealClearPolitics, but a lot can change in the next 16 years.

Consider Hispanics: ?The voters who have the strongest ties to Mexico are the ones that are heaviest Democratic,? he said. As time passes, and the children and grandchildren of immigrants move up the socioeconomic ladder, their priorities may change and they may start voting Republican, balancing out the electorate.

It?s also possible that the parties? positions will evolve.

The Democrats? priorities may shift as minorities throw their support behind them, Trende said. If those priorities are not in line with the values of white progressives, those white voters may migrate to the Republican Party.

Whatever the changes, the driving forces will go beyond race, said Michael D. Hais, coauthor of two books on the millennial generation.

In 2028, some Baby Boomers?the oldest born in 1946?will have reached their 80s. Rachel, from the famous Generation-X sitcom Friends, will be pushing 60. And the status updates (if such things still exist) of oldest millennials, born in 1982, will read ?Happy 46th Birthday.?

If these generations continue to vote as they have in the past, Boomers and Generation X-ers will remain pretty evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, he said.

Millennials, the largest generation numerically at 92 million, lean left on many issues, which would seem to favor Democrats, Hais said. But not all of them have begun to vote yet, so it?s difficult to know how they will ultimately split.?

No one knows how today?s toddlers?born into the ?plural generation??will vote in 2028. Their beliefs and political affiliations will be determined by history that?s yet to be written.

Their voting patterns will be influenced by more than their youth, said Ruy Teixeira, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

?The thinking that because they?re young they?re destined to be liberal is not true,? he said.?

In 2028,?Boomers will still be a forced to be reckoned with, said William Frey, senior fellow and demographer with the Brookings Institution.?

Although the youngest voters will be infusing the electorate with diversity, there will still be a large number of older people who are not as diverse, he said. But the differences between the way those groups vote could be driven more by age than by race.?

"Having an aged population of considerable size will bring up a whole set of issues that will diverge from the kinds of needs that these younger people will have," Frey said.

The demographic changes reflected in the Census Bureau release yesterday confirm a trend that social scientists and demographers have been watching for years, Teixeira said.

The minority share of the population has been increasing by about a half a percentage point a year, he said.

Four states and the District of Columbia had a population in 2011 in which more than 50 percent were of minority groups: Hawaii (77.1 percent minority), D.C. (64.7 percent), California (60.3 percent), New Mexico (59.8 percent), and Texas (55.2 percent), according to the census data.

Ohio pair get engaged after running half-marathon

(AP) ? An Akron couple is celebrating after their half-marathon ended up being a sort of race to the altar.

Allison Ramsey says she was "completely shocked" when her boyfriend got down on his knee to propose after they finished the Cleveland half-marathon on Sunday. The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/JqEmjs ) reports the 30-year-old Ramsey was crying but nodded yes when Nolan James Jr. popped the question.

The 25-year-old James says proposing at the race was appropriate because the pair's first date about a year ago started with a 2-mile run.

He says carrying the engagement ring for all 13.1 miles of the race made him nervous. He says he had to keep touching his pocket to be sure he hadn't lost it.

PFT: Rivera says Newton will avoid sophomore slump

Peyton ManningAP

It?s OTA time in the NFL, and the team that has undergone the biggest offensive makeover finally gets its chance to put the pieces together in a setting that, if you squint your eyes just right, almost resembles football.

As Mike Klis of the Denver Post explains it, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and the rest of the team will start their offseason non-practice practices on Monday.? They?ll have three sessions this week, three next week, four the following week, and finally a three-day mandatory minicamp starting on June 12.

It?s technically Phase 3 of the offseason program, with 10 OTA sessions.? From the CBA:? ?No live contact is permitted.? No one-on-one offense vs. defense drills are permitted (i.e., no offensive linemen vs. defensive linemen pass rush or pass protection drills, no wide receivers vs. defensive backs bump-and-run drills, and no one-on-one special teams drills involving both offense and defense are permitted).? Special teams drills (e.g., kicking team vs. return team) are permitted, provided no live contact occurs.?

The limitations for OTAs aren?t substantially different than they were in past years.? In past years, however, teams routinely ignored the rules and allowed live contact on the line of scrimmage, with linemen banging against each other even though they were wearing no pads to protect them from the helmets all players wear.? Likewise, bump-and-run coverage was a common occurrence, even though it was expressly prohibited.

While it?s likely that the issue of OTA? contact will be more closely policed under the new CBA, the fact remains that each team has up to 90 players who are competing for 53 roster spots.? And so the players who are trying to make an impression on the coaching staff may make an impression, literally, on the bodies of their opponents with the crowns of the helmets they?ll be wearing.

So that?s the next step in this new wave of player safety.? Will teams ensure that OTAs under the new CBA won?t entail contact, and what will happen if they don?t?
