Conn. grants $500K for lost business in Newtown

(AP) ? For Vito Kala, owner of an Italian restaurant not far from a street leading to the grade school in Newtown where 20 children and six educators were shot dead last month, the murders were not only emotionally draining, but also financially.

Roads in the area were initially clogged with police cars and ambulances, then by TV satellite trucks and eventually a crush of visitors paying their respects at makeshift memorials. As a result, many customers could not get to The Villa restaurant or more than a dozen other area businesses.

"We were isolated," Kala said. "It was the worst month for me."

In addition to limited access to businesses because of crowds, the long mourning period in the community soured the appetite for holiday parties, shopping and decorating. Responding to pleas for help, the state stepped in on Tuesday, giving Newtown a $500,000 grant to help businesses recover.

"The community as a whole was not in a celebratory mood to do Christmas shopping," said Elizabeth Stocker, Newtown's director of economic and community development. "People shopping, friends going out to eat and doing what you can to prepare for the holidays all got thrown out the window."

About a week after the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, business owners asked whether town officials could do anything to help them "get through the crisis," Stocker said.

So town officials went to the state. It was decided that a grant from the state's Small Town Economic Assistance Program would be the quickest way to deliver money to Newtown, said Catherine Smith, commissioner of the state Department of Economic and Community Development.

"This is a bit out of our normal realm, but it was very important for that part of the state, so we were happy to help out," Smith said.

As many as 16 businesses are affected, said Newtown First Selectman E. Patricia Llodra.

The included restaurants, a delicatessen, a dress shop, a toy store, a karate studio, a coffee shop and other small businesses that were essentially shut for nearly two weeks, Llodra. The town told state officials that not helping would devastate the small businesses.

"This would be a harm on top of a harm," Llodra said.

Additionally, there are costs to workers who lost pay because their employers closed, Stocker said.

Some businesses, though, benefited from an increase in visitors and reporters, she said.

"When we visited the businesses in Sandy Hook, a couple said they would not need assistance because they did not have any drop off in activity," she said. "Some businesses were OK."

Officials have not yet drawn up a process to distribute the money, Llodra said.

66 Million US Households Will Access The Internet Via Game ...

Ten years ago, the most common way to connect to the Internet at home was via a PC or a laptop. Now, connectivity at home is increasingly being supplemented by tablets, smartphones, and other media devices, although PCs/laptops still dominate. Consumer electronics device manufacturers cashing in on this shift are offering Internet-ready capabilities in many of their devices. Although the notion of ?connected devices? can be quite broad, we focused specifically on game consoles, Blu-ray players, and high-definition (HD) TVs in our recently published Forrester Research Connected Devices Forecast, 2012 To 2017 (US). Here is a brief commentary on each of these device segments:

  • Game consoles: In 2012, the game console manufacturers experienced declining sales. Unlike in the past, when the introduction of a new console generally saw significant uptake in sales, Nintendo?s Wii U (launched in Q4 2012) is not expected to hit the peak sales of the original Wii. We believe that this trend will be seen more broadly in the game console industry. This is largely (though not exclusively) driven by the availability of low-cost/"freemium" titles on smartphones and tablets, which fulfill the gaming needs of the casual gamer ? and have a negative impact on the console market. However, we still expect the console market to see moderate growth. By 2017, the majority of consoles will be ?connected? to an IP connection because consoles are multi-purpose and allow users to do many activities online such as rent/buy movies and TV shows, purchase games, watch streaming videos, and listen to streaming music.
  • Blu-ray players: The sales of Blu-ray players have continued to increase over the past five years but at a slower pace than the DVD players in their early years. Growth drivers for Blu-ray player sales include declining prices, bundled offers with HDTVs, DVD player replacements, the availability of more titles in the Blu-ray format, and Blu-ray disc availability via kiosk rental channels. However, consumers? preference for owning fewer optical discs and the availability of streaming services via set-top boxes, game consoles, and connected TVs will moderate the standalone Blu-ray player sales growth. Availability of Blu-ray disc playing capability in the game consoles such as Sony PS3 will also decelerate the sales of standalone Blu-ray players.
  • Connected HDTVs: By 2017, as the number of ?connectable TVs? increases, more US households will have a connected TV than will have a connected game console or a connected Blu-ray player. We expect the number of connected HDTVs to grow faster due to the availability of an increasing number of movies and TV shows via online streaming services, a shift in consumers? preference for watching more online video content via their TVs, the increasing maturity of TV operating systems, and the anticipated large-scale production of OLED TVs starting in 2014.

We expect 66 million US households ? 54% of the total ? to access the Internet via one or more of these types of devices in 2017; they will usually supplement, rather than replace, incumbent devices like PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. People will also connect to the Internet via devices such as set-top boxes, portable media players, eReaders, digital photo frames, and even connected digital cameras. With the proliferation of many consumer technology devices that are connected and the rapid rise of Social/Mobile apps, consumer behavior is taking on a profound shift in how it consumes media, interacts with brands and people, and where it interacts from. This shift will challenge the existing business models of Media and Telecom industries and will result in newer opportunities for Internet-based businesses.

Report: Syrian troops repulse rebels in Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's state media said Monday that government troops repulsed a rebel attack on a police school in the northern city of Aleppo, one day after President Bashar Assad called on Syrians to fight rebels he characterized as religious extremists.

SANA news agency said members of the "terrorist group" were killed and wounded in the late Sunday battle but did not specify the number, The government and the pro-regime media refer to rebels as terrorists.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a former commercial hub, has been a major front in the civil war since July, with battles often raging for control of military and security facilities such as the police school. Rebels have recently made significant advances there, in the east, and in the capital Damascus, bringing the civil war closer to the seat of Assad's power.

In his speech Sunday, Assad laid out terms for a peace plan but dismissed any chance of dialogue with "murderous criminals" who he said were responsible for nearly two years of violence. Nearly 60,000 people have died, according to a recent United Nations estimate.

Assad appeared confident and relaxed in a one-hour speech ? his first public address in six months. He struck a defiant tone, ignoring international demands for him to step down and saying he is ready to hold a dialogue ? but only with those "who have not betrayed Syria." He also vowed to continue the battle "as long as there is one terrorist left."

He offered a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution but demanded regional and Western countries stop funding and arming rebels trying to overthrow his regime first.

Syria's opposition swiftly rejected the proposal. Those fighting to topple the regime, including rebels on the ground, have repeatedly said they will accept nothing less than the president's departure, dismissing any kind of settlement that leaves him in the picture.

The West, including the U.S. and Britain that have called on Assad to step down denounced the speech that came amid stepped-up international efforts for a peaceful way out of the Syrian conflict.

Previous diplomatic initiatives have failed to stem the bloodshed.

Syria conflict began as peaceful protests after the uprising against Assad authoritarian rule erupted in March 2011. It morphed into civil war after a brutal government crackdown on dissent.

Best Food & Drink 2012 Panama Costa Rica Nicaragua Chifrijo Sibu

Welcome to Part 2 in our Best Of the Trans-Americas Journey 2012 series of posts. Part 2 is all about the Best Food & Beverages from the past year on the road from a gourmet surprise on a volcanic island in Nicaragua to the best chifrijo in Costa Rica. Part 1 covers the Best Adventures & Activities of 2012?and Part 3 covers the Best Hotels of the year.

Yes, end of year round-ups can be lame. On the other hand, they can also be a valuable chance for us to look back on the year that was and remember just how damn lucky we are.?Done right, an end of year round-up can also be a quick and easy way for you to get ?the best tips, tricks and truths that made our Trans-Americas Journey travels so special in 2012. Maybe, just maybe, you?ll hit the road yourself in 2013 (or 2014, no pressure).

First, a few relevant stats:

In 2012 the Trans-Americas Journey?

?thoroughly explored Nicaragua, Costa Rica and northern Panama

?drove 8,349 miles?

?spent $2,608 on fuel?

?made seven overland border crossings

We?ve also eaten nearly all of our meals in restaurants of one description or another from street food stalls to bustling markets to multi-star restaurants. In no particular order, here are some of the best bites and top tipples that made all that time on the road even tastier.

Best iced coffee: The talented baristas at the?Caf? Las Flores?coffee shops around Managua, Nicaragua turn the organic coffee grown and roasted by Caf? Las Flores into rich, satisfying coffee drinks of all descriptions including hard-to-find properly made iced coffee (US$2).?No hot coffee watered down with ice cubes here!?

Best pizza: The kitchen at?Al Cielo Hotel & Restaurant?is run by Xavier, a young French chef-slash-surfer who ditched the bustle of Paris in favor of the views and vibe at the ridge top place he helped create minutes from super surf in the town of?Aposentillo in northern?Nicaragua. Before he left Paris, a mentor gave him his pizza dough recipe as a going away present. Xavier has perfected it to suit the water and the oven in his new kitchen and, among other tasty dishes, he now offers authentic gourmet pizzas for 180 cordobas (US$7.50).?

?

Best cinnamon roll: They bake a lot of things at?La Casa de Don Colacho in Jinotega, Nicaragua but stay focused on the cinnamon rolls which have the sticky sweetness to rich pastry ratio dialed in.?

Best casual gourmet surprise: Caf? Campestre in the village of Balgue on Ometepe Island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua is owned by chef Ben Slow. He turns local, organic ingredients (much grown on his own nearby permaculture farm) into delights including homemade tagliatelle (seen drying, below), chicken curry, real chilli, humus (made with locally sourced jackfruit seeds instead of imported chickpeas?you?ll never know the difference) and much more all for less than many of the run-of-the-mill eateries on the island. His lovely and well-trained local staff and rustic/chic d?cor are also welcome surprises.?

?

Best ice cream:?It?s best to think of the frozen treat that?s been sold at La Sorbetera de Lolo Mora in San Jos??s 130 year old Central Market for more than 100 years as frozen egg nog with all the nutmeg, cinnamon, clove and rich, custardy goodness that entails. It?s even the same color as egg nog. Locals like it even more with cubes of red Jell-O in it. We liked it so much (sans Jell-O) that we made it one of our 17 Reasons Not to Blow Off the Capital.

La Sorbeteria de Lolo Mora - central Market, San Jose, Costa Rica

?

Best chifrijo in Costa Rica: Pull into a road side stand just a few miles after you exit the new pay highway from San Jose onto the Costanera highway on Costa Rica?s Pacific Coast and get ready for the best example of Costa Rica?s national dish that we had during our 5+ months in the country. The chifrijo here (shown below), made with white rice and whole red beans topped with chopped tender pork then crumbled with chopped chicharon (fried pork skin) then doused with pico de gallo and a squeeze of lime juice, is sublime.?

Chifrijo Costa Rica

Best restaurant name: Claro Que Seafood Grill, the formal restaurant for the iconic Si Como No hotel near Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica, wins this one hands down with its clever play on the common Spanish phrase claro que si (which means ?clearly? or ?of course?).

Best French fries: 9 Degrees Restaurant & Lounge in Bocas Town on Isla Colon in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago of northern Panama serves up thick cut, freshly made fries dusted in chunky salt and served on a chic waterfront outdoor deck.

Best chocolate: Sibu Chocolate?near San Jose, Costa Rica is heaven for chocolate lovers and lovers of the environment. Innovative owners Julio Fernandez Amon and George Soriano?not only produce top drawer organic hand-made chocolates they do it with local ingredients from small-scale farmers, they offset their carbon emissions and their elegant packaging is made from recycled materials.?

Small businesses can't survive without funding for their operations. They need funding in the short-term for working capital needs, seasonal needs, cyclical needs, and cash flow ebbs and flows. This is where short-term business loans come in to play.

Short-term bank loans have been difficult to obtain during the Great Recession. Banks tightened up credit and credit requirements. As the recovery progresses, credit requirements are gradually loosening. As consumers become more willing to buy, small businesses need to obtain short-term loans to ramp up their inventory. The best option for small businesses is not large banks. Check out your small community banks and credit unions instead. You may find them much more willing to work with your business.

J.R. Smith Dunk: Pablo Prigioni Sets Up Reverse Ally Oop Slam As Knicks Defeat Spurs (VIDEO)

NEW YORK -- Sometime between Stephen Jackson's sideline stumble and J.R. Smith's soaring slam, the San Antonio Spurs realized this wasn't their night.

Too much fatigue and way too much Knicks defense.

Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points, Smith kept up his surge with 20 and New York snapped San Antonio's seven-game winning streak with a 100-83 victory Thursday night.

Steve Novak added 15 points and Tyson Chandler had 10 points and 14 rebounds to help the Knicks bounce back from consecutive losses by dominating the final period against the Spurs, who appeared to run out of gas in their second game in two nights.

"They shot the hell out of it and I could see it wasn't going to happen," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Just too low on fuel and their defense was too good. Bad combination, and then they made shots, which makes it even worse."

Tim Duncan and Tony Parker each had just 11 points for the Spurs, who lost Jackson to an unusual injury, then lost what had been the NBA's longest winning streak.

Jackson played just three minutes off the bench before spraining his right ankle when he took a shot then fell back into a waitress working the sideline in front of Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Smith, who had scored 25 points in his last four games as a reserve, highlighted his outing with an acrobatic dunk in the fourth quarter that brought fans to their feet. The lobbed pass came from reserve point guard Pablo Prigioni, who had one of his most complete games since coming to the NBA at age 35, finishing with six points and nine assists.

That meant the Knicks needed just an ordinary game from Anthony, who finished with about half of the season high-tying 45 he scored in a loss against Portland on Tuesday.

"That's their scheme, to try to take me out of the game," Anthony said. "Just a matter of us making shots when we swing the ball, and Novak made shots, J.R. kept his streak alive of playing good basketball, Pablo came in and led our team from the point guard position. Everybody contributed in their own way."

The Knicks put away what had been a close game for three quarters, scoring the first 10 points of the fourth to take a 17-point lead. The Spurs, playing for the fourth time in five nights, went with reserves from there and never put much of a dent in it.

San Antonio, which averaged 111.7 points on 53.4 percent shooting during its winning streak and rang up 117 points on Wednesday in Milwaukee, shot just 36 percent in its lowest-scoring game this season. Gary Neal led the Spurs with 12 points.

"It wasn't the first time, it's not going to be the last one," Spurs reserve Manu Ginobili said of the tired performance. "But of course we've got to give them credit because they forced us to not find anything easy, they made us really work."

Popovich praised the Knicks' defense before the game, though it had slipped during their stretch of three losses in four games. Looking for a fix, coach Mike Woodson gave Marcus Camby a start at forward in hopes of ending the Knicks' slow starts, and they allowed just 19 points in the first quarter.

"Our defense was slacking the last 10 games or so. Our defense kind of went the other way," Woodson said. "We put a nice feel-good tape together to show our players how we started the season, that we were No. 1 in defense and on offense. There was some major slippage."

Amare Stoudemire had 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting in his second game of the season after knee surgery. He seemed more aggressive than in his debut Tuesday but is clearly without his typical explosiveness, having a number of shots blocked when he tried to power his way inside.

Leading 67-60 after three, the Knicks made it 77-60 on Novak's 3-pointer with 10:24 remaining in the game. New York poured it on from there, the lead growing to 20 when Smith caught a lob from Prigioni around his waist while in the air and slammed it home as the players on the Knicks bench jumped up in celebration.

"J.R. does some amazing things. He's a freak of nature," Chandler said.

Novak followed with another 3-pointer on the next possession to make it 95-72.

Jackson entered the game just 13 seconds in, but his night was over late in the period after his bizarre injury. Jackson launched a 3-pointer from the corner with 3:23 left, stepping backward out of bounds after the miss and falling onto the waitress. He limped back onto the court as the Knicks played with a 5-on-4 advantage that led to Anthony's 3-pointer. The Spurs then took a timeout and Jackson limped off toward the locker rooms.

It was unclear if the waitress was serving Bloomberg, who was seen eating a box of popcorn shortly after.

    Jackson was unavailable for comment.

Woodson said before the game he thought the Spurs were the best team in basketball right now, though Popovich dismissed that as gamesmanship he learned from Larry Brown. San Antonio sure didn't look its best while losing for the first time since a 112-106 setback at Denver on Dec. 18 and getting held well below its NBA-best 105.9 points per game.

Notes: The Spurs hadn't played here since January 2011, so this was their first time back in Madison Square Garden since renovations began. Popovich jokingly yelled at Parker for not knowing how to get from the locker room to the court before the game. ... Ginobili, Prigioni's teammate with Argentina's national team, was held to eight points on 2-of-10 shooting.

Lace Up the Skates, Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Tournament is a Go ...

The recent sub-freezing temperatures may have put a chill on many outdoor events, but has organizers of the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic warming up plans for a weekend of games, activities and civic pride in St. Clair Shores.

Organizers decided Thursday to move forward with the outdoor hockey tournament after temperatures recently dropped enough to cause the canals next to Brownie's on the Lake to freeze. Additionally, the seven-day forecast includes nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing.

"We are a go," said Shawn Nicholson, vice-president of the St. Clair Shores Hockey Association and one of the organizers of the event. "I am a lot more confident now than I was two weeks ago."

The inaugural tournament had been planned for this past January, but unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of ice led to the cancellation of the event.

Even with the cancellation last year, there has been strong interest in the event this year with 44 of the planned 48 teams already registered for the Jan. 25-27 tournament.

Each team, which is comprised of players 21-years-old and older, will have at least three games - with some being played under lights set-up on the ice - with semi-finals and championships on Sunday.

"I think it is going to be an event that brings the community together," said Greg Esler, parks and recreation director. "We want to make sure the hockey players, and their families feel special, and find St. Clair Shores a great place to live and maybe buy a house down the road."

For more information about the tournament, visit the Pond Hockey website.

Volunteers are also needed. For more information, visit the volunteers needed page.

Which Universities Are More Highly Ranked by High School Counselors Than by Colleges Officials?

Do high school counselors and college officials view universities differently? To answer this question, U.S. News is publishing a first-ever analysis of colleges in our National Universities rankings category that shows the academic reputation rankings gap between high school and college officials in our 2013 Best Colleges rankings.

How should these results be interpreted?

If a school is more highly ranked by high school counselors than by college officials for its undergraduate academic reputation, it means that the school's undergraduate reputation among its academic peers is lagging behind the evaluation of the school by high school counselors.

If a school is less highly ranked by high school counselors than by college officials for its undergraduate academic reputation, it means that the school's undergraduate reputation among its academic peers is considerably greater than the view of the school held by high school counselors.

The universities that are more highly ranked by high school counselors are generally either smaller research universities or schools that have heavy concentrations of programs in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). The universities that are more highly ranked by college officials than by high school counselors are all very large public universities--in some cases the top "flagship" public in their state.

For National Universities, the U.S. News ranking formula gives the high school counselor reputation a weight of 7.5 percent in the rankings, and the academic reputation peer score has a weight of 15 percent in the overall ranking model. Peer assessments are subjective, but they are also important because a diploma from a distinguished college helps graduates get good jobs or gain admission to top-notch graduate programs.

Only schools that were numerically ranked National Universities in the Best Colleges 2013 rankings were included in this analysis.

More highly ranked by high school counselors than by college officials

The table below shows the top schools in the National Universities ranking category where a school's 2013 Best Colleges high school counselor rank was better than the school's academic peer assessment rank by the largest number of ranking places.

Less highly ranked by high school counselors than by college officials

Residential Construction Spending Climbs to 4-Year High ...

    Last updated 19 hours ago

Renter demand and home improvement and remodeling?activity contribute to higher construction spending.?

    ?

Private residential construction spending surged 3 percent on a month-to-month basis in October 2012. The initial estimate for September was revised downward from a 2.8 percent gain down to a 1.1 percent rate of growth; however, this was more than offset by an upward bump in the previously reported estimate for August from 1.2 percent to 2.8 percent. Following increases in 14 of the last 15 months, nominal spending on private residential construction activity is at its highest dollar value since late 2008. In addition, spending has risen 32 percent above the trough registered during the third quarter of 2010.

New single-family homes continued to post solid rates of growth, increasing 3.6 percent on a month-to-month basis for the second month in a row. Spending is also 29 percent above its year-ago level and has climbed 55 percent since bottoming out in mid-2009. This latest print on construction spending merely confirms the firming recovery for new single-family home construction that has been observed via housing starts and the HMI. With permit authorizations climbing rapidly and hitting their highest levels since the summer months of 2008, we anticipate this robust pace of growth in construction activity to continue over the near term.

The positive momentum continued for the multifamily sector, notching its 13th consecutive monthly increase with a 6.2 percent gain over September 2012. Overall, the dollar value of multifamily construction activity has surged more than 82 percent from its cyclical low observed just two years ago, due in part to strong growth in renter demand. Multifamily starts have averaged better than 230,000 units over the duration of 2012 and given that permits have averaged approximately 280,000 units during the same time period, multifamily construction spending will likely rise further in the coming months.

Home improvement activity expanded 1.8 percent during October 2012, offsetting the downward revision of a 1.2 percent decline posted for September. Using the 3-month moving average to iron out some of the volatility in this metric, nominal remodeling spending has reached its highest point in five years. NAHB?s own Remodeling Market Index (RMI) has pointed to an even stronger assessment of current market conditions by professional remodelers as the RMI reached 50 for the first time since 2005.

  • Cars

Gas prices may be falling, but cars that run on it are getting more expensive. Earlier this year, the Obama administration issued new standards that <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/29/business/energy-environment/obama-unveils-tighter-fuel-efficiency-standards.html?_r=0">require automakers improve fuel efficiency</a>, and the cost of upgraded engines alone is driving up prices. Toyota hiked prices on its mid-size Camry by roughly $175, and among best selling luxury vehicles, the 2013 Lexus CT 200h will be almost $3,000 more than the 2012 model. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Groceries

Meat, poultry, and dairy prices are all expected to rise thanks to <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/How-the-Drought-Will-Impact-Your-Wallet-Expect-Increases-on-Milk-Corn-Beef/599426.html">this summer's drought</a>. Feed corn and grass were most effected, and the impact from their scarcity will soon be felt at the grocery store: price increases will hit right along with the new year. Since drought conditions forced farmers to reduce the size of their herds to combat higher feed costs, the price of beef and chicken is also slated to rise. The cost of dairy products, too, will be affected, as fewer and leaner cows produce less milk. Overall, the USDA expects food prices to rise 3.5% to 4% in 2013. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Cereal

Cereal and bakery product prices will rise too, as a result of the 2012 drought and lower wheat yields. Prices in this category began creeping up in October, and the USDA's Economic Research Service forecasts cereal and bakery product prices to rise 2.5% to 3.5% next year. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Health Care

Obamacare not withstanding, employee health care premiums are expected to rise an average of 6% in 2013, according to Aon Hewitt, a human resource consulting firm. That amount will vary by state and type of plan, but overall, employers will face higher premiums and the increased cost will be passed along in part to employees. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • TVs

While there will always be budget home entertainment options, folks who want the latest and greatest in this department will face some shockingly high price tags in 2013. According to Jeff Joseph, spokesman for the Consumer Electronics Association, Ultra HD TVs -- which include an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UltraHD">extremely high pixel density</a> -- sell for $20,000 to $25,000. High-end audio manufacturers too aren't holding back, as they incorporate premium features like Apple Airplay or standard DLNA that lets users control the entire system wirelessly. These features can drive up the cost of AV equipment in an instant. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Computers

As tablets continue to gain momentum in the consumer electronics realm, computers are returning to their original function as work-related machines -- albeit more powerful and expensive. According to Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at The NPD Group, Apple's new notebooks with retina displays are among the highest-priced models out there, and Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 8, is driving the adoption of premium touchscreen PCs. Even geeks and gamers could see higher prices, as Intel plans to <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/intel-preparing-to-put-an-end-to-user-replaceable-cpus-7000008024/">release processors that are soldered onto motherboards in 2013, rendering them un-upgradeable</a>. This would make DIY upgrades to a desktop machine impossible, forcing the computer-savvy to opt for a custom configuration from the manufacturer, which is, as a general rule, more expensive then getting a deal on the boxed CPU and replacing it on your own. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Beer

Move over gold, it's copper's time to shine! Copper prices could be on the rise thanks to a move by the SEC to approve a fund to trade the metal. The fund could lead to scarcity and higher prices, as it did for gold. The problem is that copper is used in plenty of consumer items, including residential water pipes, wire, pots, and kettles, as well as equipment for brewing beer, distilling liquor, and making candy. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Smartphones

The U.S. smartphone market has long been subsidized by service providers, offering phones at reduced prices with the signing of long-term contracts. In 2013 <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/T-Mobile-Will-End-Phone-Subsidies-But-Youll-Save-Money-in-the-Long-Run/646061.html">T-Mobile will eliminate the subsidy</a> and charge full price for its phones. While there's evidence to suggest that the carrier will in turn allow users to opt for cheaper service rates (thus saving money in the long run), the pill of a full-price phone may be hard for many to swallow. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Daily Deals

In spite of lots of bad press, <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Is-the-Daily-Deal-Site-on-Its-Death-Bed-/645906.html">the daily deal isn't dead yet</a>. It will, however, continue to evolve in 2013. Too many competitors and not enough profits are forcing these sites to focus more on product deals, lead by Groupon Goods. It therefore may become difficult to find deals on services. If you're accustomed to scoring cheap spa vouchers, for example, it may become harder to find such discounts next year, as daily deal sites will list fewer such offers and instead opt for tangible products -- leaving you to pay full-price for your indulgences. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • College

While tuition costs are always on the rise, state schools in particular are feeling the pinch. As education costs continue to increase, many states will no longer be able to subsidize much of its students' tuition costs. Meanwhile, student aid and grants aren't rising commensurate to costs, which means university expenditures -- more administrators, new dorms, and additional property -- will get passed along to students. Tuition and fees for private universities aren't increasing as much in 2013 as they have in recent years, but they are expected to rise for public 4-year colleges. Students can expect in-state tuition to increase 4.8% and fees to rise 3.7%, according to the <a href="http://trends.collegeboard.org/">College Board Advocacy & Policy Center</a>. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • iPhone 5 Accessories

Although there have been several iterations of the iPhone at this point, one thing had remained the same for several years: the dock connector. Thus, unlike cases that are outdated with the slightest change in form factor, iPhone dock accessories remained largely universal across new models. But the iPhone 5 features a radically different Lightning connector, resulting in a fleet of brand new accessories that have no prior-generation alternatives ? which means premium prices. These higher prices debuted in late 2012, and they will continue in 2013 until manufacturers begin releasing updates to these items. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

  • Shipping

While somewhat unsurprising, 2013 will see a <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Free-Shipping-Wars-Rage-as-UPS-and-Fed-Ex-Announce-Increased-Rates-for-2013/644296.html">4.5% to 4.9% hike in shipping costs</a> from both UPS and FedEx, the latter of which is slated to raise rates beginning January 7. Higher shipping costs may affect customers who predominately shop from "independent" sellers, like those found on eBay, etsy, and the like, but it may also have an impact on retailers that presently offer free shipping. Since merchants end up paying for the handling and delivery of orders that "ship free," the increased UPS and FedEx rates may affect the frequency of, and threshold at which, online orders receive free shipping in 2013. Does all this talk about rising prices get you down? Be sure to shop wisely by setting up a dealnews <a href="https://dealnews.com/mydealnews/alerts.html">email alert</a> for the specific products and categories that are important to you, so you know immediately when we see a good deal. You can also stay tuned for next week's followup to this piece that details things that will be less expensive in 2013. <a href="http://dealnews.com/features/Things-That-Will-Be-More-Expensive-in-2013/">Read more at dealnews</a>.

The Internet Watch Foundation Urges Young Men - Social Media ...

ImageResearch says that young men (aged 18-35) are most likely to stumble across child sexual abuse content and least likely to report it. So, working with London creative agency Don?t Panic!, the IWF have set about trying to get the message across to this group.

They?ve got a presence on a number of key online channels including online lads? mags, music sites, sports sites, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter for the few couple of months. Take a look at www.do-the-right-thing.org.uk and the Facebook Page and Twitter account @TheRightThingUK for the campaign.

    ?

    Do The Right Thing

    ?

    The campaign aims to be:

    • Targeted: Honing in on the specific interests of the target group, and using word play to link their interests to the IWF.
    • Relevant: Using up to-the-minute sporting events and music events.
    • Evidenced: Conforming strictly to the IWF?s research which highlighted who is most likely to stumble across child sexual abuse content and what their interests are.
    • Inclusive: It will enable as many IWF Members as possible to get involved ? should they want to.
    • Tested: The final creative was informed by a focus group of the target audience
    • Empowering: The creative is aiming to be?enabling?;? designed so that the target group feel enabled and empowered to report to the IWF.? The whole campaign is aimed at reducing the fear of reporting, and the fear of the content, or shame at having seen it.

I asked Emma Lowther, Director of Communications at the Internet Watch Foundation, how she planned to judge the success of the campaign. She told me that they were looking for specific outcomes:

    • An increased number of reports to Hotline and in particular, are reports which IWF can take action on.
    • A high number of men reporting ? they have adapted the reporting form to give reporters an option to include their gender and age bracket.
    • A high number of visits to the new Do The Right Thing microsite
    • An increased number of visits to the IWF website

They will be measuring the? reach and demographics of their followers on the new social media channels, and are conducting two online polls of 1,000 18-35 year olds ? one at the very beginning of the campaign and again at the end to measure a change in attitudes and actions by the target group.

As to whether the Twitter and Facebook communities will continue to be supported beyond the life of the online campaign, Emma said that would depend on the success of the results:

If the channels appear to be really successful, and allow us to communicate with this traditionally hard to reach group in a way which gets our messages across successfully, then we will continue using them.

It would be good to hear the results in the New Year.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A car bomb explosion tore through a crowd of Shiite pilgrims returning home Thursday from a religious commemoration, killing at least 20 and reinforcing fears of renewed sectarian violence, according to Iraqi officials.

The blast erupted late in the afternoon in the town of Musayyib, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of the Iraqi capital. It targeted worshippers returning from the Shiite holy city of Karbala following the climax of the religious commemoration known as Arbaeen.

Children were among the 20 people confirmed killed, according to a police official. He said at least 50 people were wounded.

The bomb went off in the middle of a gathering of pilgrims changing buses coming from Karbala on their way to other destinations in the country, according to police.

"The explosion shook the whole block and smashed the windows of my house," said teacher Ibrahim Mohammed, who lives nearby. "I ran to the scene of the explosion only to find charred bodies and burning cars. There were women screaming and searching for their missing children."

A hospital official confirmed the casualty toll. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to reporters.

Thursday marked the height of Arbaeen, when hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims converged on Karbala to mark the passing of 40 days after the anniversary of the seventh century martyrdom of the revered Shiite saint Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Shiite pilgrims are one of the favorite targets for Sunni insurgents during Shiite religious events.

Iraqi authorities typically tighten security in Karbala and along routes used by pilgrims, but security forces acknowledge they are unable to prevent all attacks.

As in previous years, the pilgrims practiced the ritual of self-flagellation on the streets, hoisted Shiite religious flags on trees and lamp posts and served food from tents pitched on street corners.

Zaid Mohammed, a 21-year old student, said he walked to Karbala from a nearby city to show his deep respect for Imam Hussein.

"All the people came here to show their gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices made by Imam Hussein while fighting injustice," he said. "We have decided to confront all the security risks that we might face on our way to Karbala."

State television earlier Thursday aired video of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki walking among the pilgrims.

Thursday's attack came after Iraqi authorities ordered the release of 11 women facing criminal charges and pledged to transfer other women prisoners to jails in their home provinces

The move appeared aimed at addressing a main demand during a wave of protests by the country's Sunni minority against the Baghdad government.

The demonstrations erupted following the arrest of bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, one of the central government's most senior Sunni officials. The protests tap into deeper Sunni feelings of perceived discrimination and unfair application of laws against their sect by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government.

Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, another high-ranking Sunni official, is living in exile in Turkey after he was handed multiple death sentences in absentia for allegedly running death squads, a charge he dismisses as politically motivated.

Justice Ministry spokesman Haider al-Saadi said the families of the imprisoned women can secure their release by paying bail. He added that 13 Sunni women convicted on criminal charges will be transferred from a Baghdad jail to prisons in their home provinces of Anbar, Salahuddin and Ninevah to serve out their sentences.

The detention of female prisoners has been a focus of the demonstrations, but it was not clear whether the decision to release some of them will satisfy the protesters.

Hall of fame: Craig Hockenberry, Gedeon Maheux, and Twitteriffic

Hall of fame: Craig Hockenberry, Gedeon Maheux, and Twitteriffic

Twitterrific was the first native social networking client on the iPhone. Created by Craig Hockenberry and Gedeon Maheux of the Iconfactory, it began as the Mobile Twitterrific project in August of 2007, only two short months after the original iPhone shipped, and well before Apple announced even the plan for an official SDK. Development started "in the open", with a proof-of-concept made available on Google Project Hosting. Hockenberry wrote on Furbo at the time:

Don?t expect much in terms of usability or elegance. The application only initiates a network connection to Twitter, downloads a timeline feed as XML, and then parses it into a data model. The user name from the model is then displayed in a table view. Sounds pretty simple, right?

It wasn't. The Twitter API was immature, the iPhone API not yet public, and the hundreds small decisions, some of which may seem obvious in retrospect, all had to be discovered, considered, tested, and implemented. Twitter and the iPhone were two great things that could become even greater together, but it was up to Hockenberry and Maheux to realize it.

In September of 2007, Hockenberry posted a screenshot on Furbo as part of the following tease:

It?s been rather quiet around here for the past couple of weeks. This is why:

He later updated the post, saying that they'd be holding off on future development until the iPhone SDK event in 2008. When the App Store opened in June of 2008, Twitterrific was there first. And that's only one of an astounding list of firsts Twitterrific racked up.

Twitterrific, in addition to being the first native Twitter client for iPhone, was the first native Twitter client for Mac, and was in the iPad App Store the day it launched in 2010 as well. Twitterrific was first to use a bird icon in association with a Twitter app, their signature Ollie. Twitterrific was first to describe a Twitter post as a Tweet. Twitterrific (still in beta at the time) was the first to win an Apple Design Award for an iPhone social networking app. Twitterrific was first to provide a character counter, something of great value given the built-in limit of the service. Twitterrific was first to support @replies (now @mentions) and conversations. And the list goes on and on.

Yet the Iconfactory never rested on those laurels. They launched both a free (with ads) and a paid (premium) version of Twitterrific with the original App Store, to navigate around Apple's lack of trials. And they kept updating it.

Twitterrific 2 arrived in May of 2009, with Iconfactory designer David Lanham, joining the team to handle the heavy interface lifting. By then other Twitter clients had appeared and feature escalation had begun. The Iconfactory managed to keep the surface layer of Twitterrific remarkably clean, but also managed to tuck away a lot of functionality thanks to deeper levels of interface. Louie Mantia, who was also at the Iconfactory at the time, and contributed some elements, elaborated on part of the process in a post on Mantia

Twitterrific 3, which launched alongside the iPad in 2010, saw the Iconfactory not only add a tablet-optimized interface, step back and return to core functionality. Maheux wrote about the tough-love approach on gedblog:

Twitterrific 3 for iPhone benefits from all the work that has already gone into the iPad including: proper retweets, lists, saved searches and more. Add to this the long-awaited full landscape support that our users have been crying out for and Twitterrific is a whole new experience on the iPhone. All these things aside, rebooting the app in this fashion has allowed us to evaluate each feature on its own merits. Free of the pressure to include everything but the kitchen sink, Twitterrific now starts fresh and will gain new users. Once all the versions are in sync, we can concentrate on bringing updates to Twitterrific across all platforms simultaneously. This will hopefully allow us to avoid the pitfalls of having one version wildly out of sync with the rest (like the current Mac version).

Hockenberry and Lanham both shared their thoughts on the new release on as well, on Furbo and dlanham respectively.

Fast forward, and late 2012 saw Hockenberry, Maheux, and Lanham, as well as the Iconfactory's Sean Heber, release Twitterrific 5, once again completely re-coded and re-designed, and once again returning to the core idea of Twitterrific and interpreting it for the current and next generation of Twitter users.

Hockenberry gave a behind-the-scenes look at the process on Furbo:

As soon as you launch Twitterrific 5, you?ll realize that it?s a clean slate. The visual design is obviously a fresh start, but everything under the covers is as well. When presented with a clean slate, you?re very careful what goes on it. It?s best feature is simplicity.

Maheux and Lanham shared their thoughts with us as well, in an episode of Iterate, and Hockenberry and Heber did likewise for an upcoming episode of debug (check back on Friday for that).

From a then brand new and yet-to-be-released API, through intense competition, facing the often opaque constraints of the platform they built on, and increasing hostility from the service they targeted, the team at the Iconfactory have not only persevered, but triumphed, and in doing so they've helped inspire the developer community and delight the customer base alike.

That's why, as part of the inaugural iMore hall of fame, we're honoring Craig Hockenberry, Gedeon Maheux, and the granddaddy of Twitter apps, Twitterrific.

Key hearing next week for alleged Colo. theater shooter

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? Prosecutors and defense lawyers in the Colorado theater shooting case said Wednesday that they're ready for a crucial hearing next week in which prosecutors will outline their case against James Holmes.

The lawyers and Holmes appeared before state District Judge William B. Sylvester to make sure everything is prepared for the hearing. It starts Monday and is scheduled to run all week.

At its conclusion, Sylvester will decide if the evidence is sufficient to put Holmes on trial.

Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and wounding 70 on July 20 in a movie theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora. Prosecutors say he opened fire during a midnight showing of the Batman movie "The Dark Night Rises."

During Wednesday's hearing, prosecutors and defense lawyers also went to Sylvester's bench to discuss a sealed motion from the prosecution that made some reference to witnesses. Sylvester said he planned to rule on it later in the day but wouldn't refer to witnesses by name.

Holmes didn't say anything during the half-hour hearing.

He is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder and hasn't been asked to enter a plea yet. His lawyers have said he suffers from mental illness.

The preliminary hearing will give the public its first officially sanctioned look at much of the evidence against Holmes.

Sylvester imposed a gag order shortly after Holmes' arrest barring attorneys and investigators from speaking publicly about the case, and many documents have been sealed.

The University of Colorado, where Holmes was a graduate student, has also been tight-lipped about the case.

At prosecutors' request, Sylvester barred the university from releasing records requested by numerous media organizations. Prosecutors argued that the information could jeopardize Holmes' right to a fair trial. Sylvester initially agreed but amended his order last month to allow the release after media organizations objected in court.

Holmes was enrolled in a Ph.D. neuroscience program at the university. Investigators said he began stockpiling firearms and ammunition while taking classes in the spring.

In June, he made threats to a professor and on June 10 filed withdrawal papers after failing a year-end exam, prosecutors said. The next day he saw his school psychiatrist who tried to report him to a campus security committee, according to Holmes' lawyers.

    Lovie fired after missing playoffs

The day after the 2012 NFL regular season ended, Judge David Doty convened a hearing on the question of whether the NFLPA should be able to pursue a collusion claim arising from the salary-cap penalties imposed in March on the Cowboys and the Redskins.? The day after the 2012 NFL regular season ended, Judge Doty issued a decision.

In short, the NFL removed a total of $46 million in cap space from the two teams for treating the uncapped year of 2010 as, well, uncapped.? The NFLPA, despite agreeing to the cap penalties in exchange for an agreement by the league to artificially increase the 2012 salary cap to a level north of the 2011 number, claimed that comments made in the aftermath of the announcement of the cap penalties disclosed for the first time that shenanigans were occurring in 2010.

The NFL argued that any potential claim for collusion was barred by the simple fact that the parties agreed in 2011 to end all litigation when finalizing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.? Judge Doty agreed, finding that ?the NFLPA released the claims it attempts to assert in the underlying action.?

As a result, the settlement agreement won?t be reopened, and the NFLPA won?t be able to pursue upwards of $1 billion in damages from the NFL.

While the union may now appeal the outcome, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit has a reputation for being conservative and, thus, pro-business.? Which makes it highly unlikely that Judge Doty?s decision would be overturned.

Indeed, most judges regardless of politics prefer to see settled cases remain settled.? In this case, the NFL and the NFLPA resolved their differences, including any claim that there was collusion in 2010 regarding the uncapped year that, based on the penalties imposed on the Cowboys and Redskins, wasn?t really uncapped.
