Miller's reserve role bolstered Kentucky

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Losing his starting job hasn't kept Kentucky senior Darius Miller from providing the leadership that has kept the freshman-laden Wildcats on track for a national championship.

When the freshmen needed help finding their classes, Miller was there. When it was time to work out, Miller made sure everyone was on time. When he needed to sit for the good of the team, Miller took a willing role on the bench even though freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was hesitant to take Miller's starting role.

"He's a great senior and great leader. When we're not doing good in practice he huddles us up and tells everybody to pick it up. He's a great player," Kentucky guard Doron Lamb said. "For Darius, coming off the bench on a great team like this, he comes into games and steps it up and gives us energy off the bench. That's his personality. He's been doing it since the summertime really. He's never changed."

Miller had every reason to be upset after Kidd-Gilchrist replaced him in the lineup.

His reaction? Not a peep.

If Miller has an ego, it can't compete with his drive to win it all with the Wildcats. He just might pull the true Kentucky trifecta in the process ? Mr. Basketball for the state, Kentucky high school champion and an NCAA title winner for the school he grew up loving in Maysville, Ky., about 65 miles away from Lexington.

Miller may or may not start in New Orleans when the Wildcats (36-2) play Louisville (30-9) on Saturday in the national semifinals. It hardly matters.

He's not a sixth man; he's Kentucky's sixth starter.

"He's our senior," freshman Marquis Teague said. "He knows what it takes."

Miller has always walked a delicate line. He was signed by Billy Gillispie, who was fired at the end of Miller's freshman season.

Coach John Calipari quickly weeded through the mishmash roster but liked Miller's ability to pick up the dribble drive offense, his unselfishness and his size. All the while, Miller had to deal with the spotlight of the school's rabid fan base that's starved for its first title since 1998.

"It was different for me. It took some adjustment living in I guess what you would say is fishbowl. ... Everybody sees what you're doing, pays attention to what you're doing," Miller said. "When we're around campus, people know who we are. We've got to watch what we do. We can't do anything silly."

Miller worked his way into a starting role ? 69 times in 76 games over his sophomore and junior years as Kentucky went deeper each time in the NCAA tournament. Then Calipari hauled in his third straight No. 1 recruiting class, and Miller became the odd man out to Kidd-Gilchrist.

Kidd-Gilchrist felt bad for bumping his teammate, went to Calipari and offered to go to the bench to give Miller back his starting role. Miller didn't want that. He said he wanted what was best for the team, what gave them the best chance to win.

Kidd-Gilchrist stayed. Miller sat with only one spot start over nearly two months until the SEC tournament final. This time, when Kidd-Gilchrist again told Calipari to consider a switch, Miller was in the starting lineup. Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt, but it sparked Miller in time for the NCAA tournament.

"For him to be able to do something like that, that meant a lot to me," said Miller, who is averaging 14.2 points in the last five games. "Just the way he showed support to me and the way the coaches showed support by letting me start in the SEC tournament, that meant a lot for me and got me going."

This would seem to be Miller's moment with all of the young Wildcats relying on his experience.

But there's still a personal hole in his resume. He's never had a memorable performance against Louisville in four previous meetings.

The first two years he played the Cardinals, he didn't score a point. He's never reached double figures against them, and in Kentucky's 69-62 victory on Dec. 31 he managed more turnovers (a career-high eight) than points (seven).

"The rivalry is huge," Miller said. "It's been nice for me to grow up in the type of environment like that, being able to see it my whole life. There's been some great games."

Knowing so much, Miller has learned exactly what to tell his teammates about it ? nothing at all.

"I don't even tell them, really. I don't try to feed into it or anything. That just puts more pressure on the team. That's something we don't need," Miller said. "If somebody asks me about it, I'll be like, 'Yes, it's a big rivalry for people in the state.' But they don't need to worry about that.

"They just need to worry about playing basketball."

THC Neuroprotective In Model Of Parkinson Disease

Plymouth, United Kingdom--(ENEWSPF)--March 29, 2012. ?The administration of THC is protective against neuronal injury in a human Parkinson's disease (PD) cell culture model, according to data to be published in the journal Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology. Parkinson's disease is a degenerative brain disorder marked by involuntary movements.

Investigators at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom assessed the protective properties of THC on brain cells exposed to PD-relevant toxins.

Researchers reported that THC was protective against all three of the toxins tested in the study. By contrast, separate administration of the non-psychotropic cannabinoid CBD (cannabidiol) and the synthetic cannabinoid agonist WIN55,212-2 "were unable to elicit the same neuroprotection."

Previously reported survey data of patients diagnosed with PD found that nearly half of respondents who tried cannabis experienced therapeutic benefit from it, including the relief of tremors and muscle rigidity.

Full text of the study, ?(9) -THC exerts a direct neuroprotective effect in a human cell culture model of Parkinson's disease, appears online in the journal Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology.

A chromosomal abnormality in children with a deadly form of brain cancer is linked with a poorer chance of survival, clinician scientists at The University of Nottingham have discovered.

The study led by experts at Nottingham's Children's Brain Tumour Research Centre as part of a European collaboration could potentially lead to a new diagnostic test to allow doctors to identify youngsters who are at the highest risk associated with an ependymoma tumour and may need aggressive life-saving treatments.

The research could also help them to decide which children with the tumour have a better prognosis and would benefit from less intensive therapies, reducing their exposure to a range of side effects which can cause permanent disabilities, having a debilitating impact on them for the rest of their lives.

The study, published in the April 1 edition of the journal Clinical Cancer Research, focused on looking at abnormal copies of chromosomes in the cells of ependymoma tumours and aimed to establish whether it was associated with a worse outlook for children suffering from the disease.

The research, led by Professor Richard Grundy and Dr John-Paul Kilday, found that increased copies of a specific region of a chromosome called 1q25 were associated with around 20 per cent of the 147 tumours they tested from European children with ependymoma and that it was associated with a worse outcome in younger children treated with surgery and chemotherapy.

In addition, when combining the results for 1q25 copy gain with how much tumour was removed at the time of surgery, the scientists could accurately place the children into three risk groups high, intermediate and standard.

Dr Kilday said: "This study is the first to assess copy number gain like this in groups of children with ependymoma who have been treated in a similar way and is an important step forward in being able to predict the future for children with these brain tumours"

"We are now hoping that these findings are reproduced in other studies currently underway in other countries, including the USA" added Professor Grundy, "If their results match ours, then the presence of 1q25 copy gain in childhood ependymoma could be introduced into future international treatment planning as a new marker of poor outcome which will in turn define treatment. We would intend that this should be something each patient's tumour is tested for at the time of diagnosis."

Ependymomas are brain tumours that can occur at any age but are more common in children. Despite improvements in therapy over recent years, the prognosis for children with this cancer remains poor 40 per cent of affected children still die.

One of the reasons that survival for childhood ependymomas has not improved is that, until now, doctors have not been able to accurately predict which tumours will behave more or less aggressively than others. Factors that have helped the ability to predict outcomes in other cancers, such as patient sex, age, how much of the tumour is removed and how aggressive the tumour appears under the microscope, have not been found to be consistently reliable in previous studies.

In normal humans, the cells which make up our body tissue contain chromosomes made up of DNA and proteins the building blocks of life. Normally, our cells have two copies of 23 chromosomes (numbered 1 to 22) plus two sex chromosomes, making a total of 46 chromosomes. Each chromosome has two arms a short arm called the p arm and a long arm called the q arm.

In tumour cells the number of chromosomes can vary significantly from the normal cell numbers and in ependymoma a frequent finding from biological studies is increased copies of chromosome number 1, specifically increased numbers of the long arm of chromosome 1. This abnormality is termed 1q copy number gain.

For the Nottingham-led study, the scientists assessed the results from 147 brain ependymomas in young UK and French children who received tumour surgery followed by chemotherapy and older European children who received tumour surgery followed by radiotherapy.

Copy number gain of 1q in the ependymoma cells from each of the 147 patients was assessed using a technique called fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) in which pieces of DNA called probes are made in the lab containing a fluorescent dye. This enables the tumour cells to be seen down a fluorescent microscope. In the Nottingham project, the scientists used a green probe that bound to a region within chromosome 1q of the tumour cells, called 1q25.

The team then linked which of the ependymomas had increased copies of the 1q25 probe in their cells to corresponding patient data to work out whether increased copy number gain was associated with a worse survival rate.

In addition, when combining the results for 1q25 copy gain with how much tumour was removed at the time of surgery, the scientists could accurately place the children into three risk groups high, intermediate and standard.

Dr Kilday said: "This study is the first to assess copy number gain like this in groups of children with ependymoma who have been treated in a similar way and is an important step forward in being able to predict the future for children with these brain tumours"

"We are now hoping that these findings are reproduced in other studies currently underway in other countries, including the USA" added Professor Grundy, "If their results match ours, then the presence of 1q25 copy gain in childhood ependymoma could be introduced into future international treatment planning as a new marker of poor outcome which will in turn define treatment. We would intend that this should be something each patient's tumour is tested for at the time of diagnosis."

Ependymomas are brain tumours that can occur at any age but are more common in children. Despite improvements in therapy over recent years, the prognosis for children with this cancer remains poor 40 per cent of affected children still die.

One of the reasons that survival for childhood ependymomas has not improved is that, until now, doctors have not been able to accurately predict which tumours will behave more or less aggressively than others. Factors that have helped the ability to predict outcomes in other cancers, such as patient sex, age, how much of the tumour is removed and how aggressive the tumour appears under the microscope, have not been found to be consistently reliable in previous studies.

In normal humans, the cells which make up our body tissue contain chromosomes made up of DNA and proteins the building blocks of life. Normally, our cells have two copies of 23 chromosomes (numbered 1 to 22) plus two sex chromosomes, making a total of 46 chromosomes. Each chromosome has two arms a short arm called the p arm and a long arm called the q arm.

In tumour cells the number of chromosomes can vary significantly from the normal cell numbers and in ependymoma a frequent finding from biological studies is increased copies of chromosome number 1, specifically increased numbers of the long arm of chromosome 1. This abnormality is termed 1q copy number gain.

For the Nottingham-led study, the scientists assessed the results from 147 brain ependymomas in young UK and French children who received tumour surgery followed by chemotherapy and older European children who received tumour surgery followed by radiotherapy.

Copy number gain of 1q in the ependymoma cells from each of the 147 patients was assessed using a technique called fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) in which pieces of DNA called probes are made in the lab containing a fluorescent dye. This enables the tumour cells to be seen down a fluorescent microscope. In the Nottingham project, the scientists used a green probe that bound to a region within chromosome 1q of the tumour cells, called 1q25.

The team then linked which of the ependymomas had increased copies of the 1q25 probe in their cells to corresponding patient data to work out whether increased copy number gain was associated with a worse survival rate.

Shaun Johnson: Occupying the Department of Education

Between March 30 and April 2 of 2012, public school advocates will arrive in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Department of Education on Maryland Avenue to make a clarion call in opposition to test-driven and data-mad education reforms. The event will include four days worth of teach-ins, marches, a documentary screening, and a Sunday evening reception.

This is not a political occupation in the sense of what we've come to know in the last several months. In fact, United Opt Out National, the organization leading the event without any sponsorship of any kind, is behaving in a manner becoming of many educators. Permits and permissions have been secured, a detailed schedule is available, and everything within the organizers' control is, well, organized.

From my perspective, the myriad occupy movements operate based on a "nuisance of presence." That is, congregate in largely public and visible locations for extended periods of time to make a temporary home. The constant presence is by itself a form of protest, notwithstanding the additional marches, conversations, and visual representations that fit a more conventional view of protest movements.

Occupying the Department of Education on March 30 is an entirely legal occupation. It is a 96-hour congregation and discussion of like-minded educators, students, and parents who are resisting the prominence of high-stakes standardized testing, railing against attempts made by ALEC and other privately funded organizations to draft model legislation to ultimately privatize public schools, and to drown out the voices of charlatans and pundits who lack the credibility to comment on education.

So what is this about an occupation then? Well, we can argue all things occupy, but I'll let that debate play out in the comments. There are strong positions for and against the movement. There's also this huge abyss in the middle populated by folks who just don't care either way. We don't hear too much from them, probably because they don't make good media. I know a lot of people who never utter any derivation of the word "occupy" unless it refers to a bathroom, and that's all right with me.

The Occupy the DOE in Washington, DC on March 30 may be an "occupy" event in name only. That is, the proper authorities approved the permits. No one's sleeping in a tent. No one is unwelcome. But it is turning various sites at and around the DOE into temporary outdoor classrooms.

Alternative to an ongoing physical presence, United Opt Out National will temporarily "occupy" the conversation on education reform, demanding that educators, parents, and students, those who actually know about curriculum and teaching, receive an equal voice. As it currently stands, it is only those with money and political influence who make the key decisions regarding education reform and policy.

It has been the contention of United Opt Out all along that a powerful weapon against corporatized reforms is non-compliance with the current testing regime. It's that simple: Nothing needs to be done other than refusing to do something. Without the highly coveted quantitative information from which to discipline and punish students and their teachers, perhaps then those not part of the large foundations will get someone's attention.

The monthly payments will be made to the lawyers who in turn pay the creditor. This is often a better option for people.

Debt settlement, also known as debt reduction, is when the attorneys negotiate with creditors to lower the amount of money that is owed. However, depending on your situation, this may or may not hurt one's credit score. This option is best for people who have really fallen behind on payments.

Hopefully settlement can solve people's problems. But, as a last resort, bankruptcy could be necessary. If you feel like all other options have failed and the debt is just far too much, think about filing for bankruptcy.

Trey Sesler Studied Serial Killers Before Allegedly Shooting HIs Texas Family

HEMPSTEAD, Texas -- A man charged with fatally shooting his parents and brother in their Texas home had been studying serial killers and mass shootings like the one at Columbine High School and hoped to carry out his own act of public violence, authorities said Thursday.

Trey Sesler, 22, was arrested Tuesday after police found the bodies of his family members at their home in Waller, about 40 miles northeast of Houston. Police said they've also recovered ammunition and about six weapons, including handguns and long rifles.

"When you have those things, I think you have reached that point you're getting ready, at least physically," Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith said. "You have prepared yourself to go do that massive shooting."

Authorities said Sesler spent time "grading" the work of serial killers and "researching mass shootings in public areas." Asked whether Sesler named specific targets, Waller Police Chief Phil Rehak said: "Time will tell."

Smith said Sesler exhibited escalating criminal behavior that started with him killing pets, then setting fires and shooting at buildings.

"We're thinking he obviously approached a point in his life that he was getting ready to do some act of violence, which he did," the sheriff said. "Was that the end of it, does that stop it? Things like that will never be known."

Sesler, who already was charged with murder and being held on a $3 million bond, was arraigned Thursday on a capital murder charge. Bond on the capital charge was set at $2 million.

Sesler did not immediately have an attorney. Smith said a judge would appoint one for him.

If convicted of capital murder, he could face the death penalty.

Sesler maintained an active YouTube account and posted reviews of Japanese animation, calling himself "Mr. Anime." Several videos showed him firing weapons, authorities said.

Besides the guns, police also have seized his computer and journals and are examining their contents. "Hopefully that'll shed a little more light," Rehak said.

There was no immediate evidence Sesler had any accomplices, Smith and Rehak said.

Sesler had no prior criminal history. He had attended a nearby junior college and held part-time jobs. Authorities said he told them he delivered pizzas.

During the eight hours that investigators interviewed Sesler after his arrest, he was quiet, respectful and cooperative and showed "a full range of emotions," Smith said.

"He did cry more than once," Smith said. "He has shown some remorse. ... He's certainly aware of what he's done."

Authorities were called to the family's home Tuesday afternoon. Relatives were worried because they hadn't heard from the family members.

Police found the bodies of 58-year-old Lawton Ray Sesler, his wife, Rhonda, 57, and their son, Mark, 26. The father's body was in a bedroom, the mother's in a garage and the son's in a hallway. Multiple rifle casings were scattered throughout the house, according to the arrest warrant.

Smith said the three likely died Sunday night and there was evidence Trey Sesler left the house, then returned and left again.

In the criminal complaint filed with the court, police described finding writing on the walls that read: "I love my mom, dad and brother," "why did I do this," and "God forgive me, because I cannot forgive myself."
