Rajiv Shah of USAID sees the way ahead on Aids and global health ...

By SarahBoseley

While USA administrator Rajiv Shah and secretary of state Hillary Clinton hailed an Aids-free future if all countries pull together, the UK failed to send a government minister to address the International Aids Conference in WashingtonAmidst the creative chaos that is the 25,000-delegate strong International Aids Conference in Washington DC last week, I spoke to the head of America?s development programme, Rajiv Shah, who has a very clear vision of where USAID is going and what it hopes to achieve. He appears to be a little concerned, however, that Europe may not keep pace ? particularly on the finance but perhaps also on the approach.Shah talks of health systems and integration, rather than single diseases and narrowly focused programmes. That was fine in the last decade, he said, but no longer. He cites his Child Survival Call to Action programme.

BIG NIGHT FOR PHELPS

After missing the medal podium in his first swim in London and taking a surprising silver in the 4x100 freestyle relay, Michael Phelps is back for two more shots at another gold medal on Tuesday. He will try to defend his title in the 200-meter butterfly and also swim in the 4x200 freestyle final.

Phelps had the fifth-fastest time in the 200 fly preliminaries on Monday, and he feels ready to go again.

"I'm pretty happy with that swim," Phelps said. "That's all I needed it to be."

'STUPID RULE'

"In this system it's a shame that the all-around champion doesn't get to compete in the finals at the Olympics because of a stupid rule." ? John Geddert, coach of reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber, who will miss a shot at Olympic gold in Thursday's Olympic gymnastics all-around finals because international rules allow only two competitors per country.

JUDO GEM

Marti Malloy earned the second-ever Olympic judo medal for an American woman, and she was ready.

She proudly displayed the bronze prize for photographers and offered to strike the traditional pose.

"I've been working on my bite," she said Monday night. "I'm not sure if it should be mean or happy."

The 26-year-old Malloy got into judo when her parents enrolled her in a free class on a military base when she was growing up in Oak Harbor, Wash. She went on to compete at San Jose State University, and 92-year-old coach Yoshihiro Uchida made the trip to London to see her big win.

Malloy's three brothers also learned judo when they were kids, and she said she felt fortunate to be involved with the sport.

"Judo is one of those sports that in the U.S. obviously isn't very well known but is the thing that will teach you the most about discipline, respect, hard work, dedication," she said. "I know all sports are like that but judo especially, those are the ideals that the sport is built around."

RATINGS WIN

The Nielsen company says 36 million people watched NBC's Olympic coverage Sunday night, the biggest audience for the second night of a non-U.S. summer Olympics competition since TV began covering them in 1960.

Counting the opening ceremonies on Friday, an average of 35.8 million people have tuned in for the three nights. That's well above the 30.6 million who watched the first three nights in Beijing in 2008 and considerably more than the 24 million who saw the first three nights of the Athens games of 2004.

STRICT MUM

Talk about strict parenting.

New Zealand kayaker Mike Dawson made the semifinals of the kayak slalom at the Olympics despite being given a two-second penalty by his mother Kay ? who is a judge at the games.

Dawson touched gate five when going down the 18-gate Olympic course on Sunday, and his mother didn't hesitate to penalize her son. It was one of two two-second penalties Dawson received, but he still advanced to Wednesday's semis.

Dawson joked in an email to The Associated Press on Monday that he was tempted to get his coach to put in a protest "about that particular judge."

It would have made dinnertime at the Dawsons even more awkward. His coach is father Les.

"That would've had all sorts of ramifications after the Olympics and besides, I like mum's cooking too much!" Dawson joked in his message to AP.

TWITTER INSULT INVESTIGATED

The Twitter insult against British diver Tom Daley has attracted the attention of police.

Daley's father died of brain cancer a year ago and the 18-year-old Olympian had hoped win a medal "for myself and my dad." But he finished finishing fourth, out of medal contention, in the 10-meter synchronized platform with teammate Pete Waterfield.

Afterward, Twitter user (at)Rileyy69 sent him this message: "You let your dad down i hope you know that."

Dorset Police tweeted tonight: "Regarding tweets to (at)tomdaley1994 - we are aware of the issue and we are actively looking into it."

In Britain, tweeting messages considered menacing, offensive or indecent can lead to prosecution.

POTUS WATCHING?

We know that FLOTUS (first lady of the United States Michelle Obama) has cheered on the Olympians from the stands in London. But what about POTUS (president of the U.S.), who stayed home?

The White House couldn't say Monday whether President Barack Obama has been watching but thought it likely.

"I know that he was looking forward to the Olympics starting so I'd be surprised if 72 hours into it he hadn't seen it yet," deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said as Obama flew Air Force One to New York for an evening fundraiser. Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki joked that the Olympics would be forced on to all the plane's TVs to improve the odds.

Here's what could be seen in the back cabin: Korea v. Denmark in handball, and weightlifters from Indonesia and Turkey. No word on what Obama was doing up front.

HE'S NO SLOUCH

Nick Thoman almost left swimming after 2008, thinking then it might be time to try something else.

Now an Olympic silver medalist ? he and Matt Grevers went 1-2 in the men's 100 backstroke for the United States on Monday night ? Thoman is headed to school again, starting next spring.

"I didn't actually graduate college," Thoman said. "So I'm going to go back to school and get my degree so that I can do something with my life."

Whoa.

Do something with his life? Did he not notice the silver medal dangling from his neck? Everyone in the room giggled anxiously, waiting to see if Thoman would provide the punch line.

And he did.

"Something else," Thoman said, as the giggles turned into full-blown laughter.

The crowd booed.

He added: "He's just checked into a hotel."

HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES!

Happy Gilmore, you have your archery equivalent.

British archer Larry Godfrey delighted the crowd Monday as he celebrated reaching the men's individual 70-meter quarterfinals at Lord's cricket ground.

Adorned in aviator shades and bleached highlights, Godfrey emulated batting a six ? the equivalent of a home run in baseball ? after advancing.

"I thought it would be a bit of fun," he explained.

The 198-year-old venue is considered "The Home of Cricket."

The Bristol-based archer is hoping that home soil will be the trick for his first medal in three Olympics.

Parents find terms 'large' or 'gaining too much weight' less offensive than 'obese'

Parents find terms 'large' or 'gaining too much weight' less offensive than 'obese' [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 30-Jul-2012

'Obese' or 'overweight' are hurtful labels, whereas terms like 'large' considered less offensive, descriptive terms: UAlberta research

If doctors want to develop a strong rapport with parents of overweight children, it would be best if physicians used terms like "large" or "gaining too much weight" as opposed to the term "obese." These were findings recently published by medical researchers at the University of Alberta.

Geoff Ball, a researcher in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry with the Department of Pediatrics, worked with department colleagues Amanda Newton and Carla Farnesi to review articles about the important relationship between families and health professionals when it comes to addressing concerns about children's weight. Farnesi has since moved to Montreal where she will soon start her PhD at Concordia University. Their findings were recently published in the peer-reviewed journal, Pediatric Obesity.

They found the delicate balance was affected by: parents' preferences about language regarding obesity, how health professionals talked about weight, how care was delivered and parents' expectations.

"Health professionals probably shouldn't use terms like fat, chubby, overweight or obese," says Ball. "Terms that are more neutral, less judgmental and less stigmatizing should be used. Most of the time families will want that sensitive type of language. And that's what clinicians should want, too, because that's what families want."

Some parents felt blamed for their children's weight issues, while others found health professionals "rude and judgmental" or inattentive.

When it came to discussing sensitive issues around children's weight, parents felt it was the role of doctors to spearhead that difficult conversation, especially if there were health concerns. But health professionals were somewhat reluctant to do this because they didn't want to offend families and negatively affect the physician-patient relationship especially when it came to raising concerns about weight during a medical appointment about an unrelated medical issue.

Ultimately, if parents feel ostracized by physicians, the families are less likely to follow doctor recommendations, the study concluded.

Ensuring physicians receive guidance on how to address sensitive topics like weight could be a good idea, noted the paper. It would also be worthwhile to get more feedback from parents about the issue, and to encourage families to work with doctors as a team to find solutions for children. Using more sensitive language about weight is also needed.

"If these changes are made it could lead to: families being more apt to follow the doctor's advice, families being more apt to return for follow-up appointments, better interactions between health-care professionals and families, and families being more satisfied with their care," says Ball. "You want to have a positive rapport with families so they stay engaged. Those are outcomes you would want."

###

The research was funded by the Women and Children's Health Research Institute through the generous support of the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation.

Ball is also an adjunct professor with both the School of Public Health and the Faculty of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences.

That depends on the time frame in which you want to trade; intraday trading or swing trading.

There are advantages to day trading as well as position trading as well as you want to find out which one fits your schedule and personality the best.

Here are two methods which cover both time frames, http://jcls-forex.com/forex-trading-strategy.html

Ecommerce Holiday Checklist - Online Store Review Tips | Atlantic BT

Cool Sant's Holiday Ecommerce Checklist
Marty?s Ecommerce Holiday Checklist

As we enter the Dog Days of Summer ecommerce teams are making a list and checking it twice. After more than 12 years in the trenches and over $30M in online revenue I?enjoyed this quiet before the storm time of year. If you think of the holiday selling season as starting with Back-To-School and ending with Valentine?s then the?starter?s gun is up and we are about to race again. Here is a quick list of holiday ecommerce tips you can check before the jolly man in the red suit gets off the beach and onto his sleigh.

Free Shipping During Holidays

If you don?t have free shipping promotions you are nuts, but you don?t have to do all orders all shipments all the time. Our ecommerce team liked to go out aggressive?and early and then begin to tapper by using trigger points and other tactics to compete but not give away the farm. Tactics such as:

  • Start early with All Orders & All Shipments for a weekend.
  • Start on an ?Early Bird? weekend right after Halloween.
  • Create and use shipping offer deadlines.
  • Create triggers in the middle of your AOV (Average Order Value you will exceed triggers by 40%).
  • Get your shipping table up early and test to make sure it is clear.

Holiday Email Marketing

The Internet is going to be awash in email marketing this season. Be smart about these email-marketing trends:

  • Relevant emails sell and don?t get unsubscribed from.
  • Tell a story over time.
  • Support with social and curate in customer feedback and ideas.
  • People curate emails with mobile, so look good on a phone.

List health is important, but we never saw more than .05% churn even as we ramped our frequency in 4Q. That is good, but it could have been better.

  • You?want your unsubscribe percentages to go DOWN as you increase frequency or you will take a chunk out of your list. Even .05% loss at 4x your normal email marketing frequency can hurt list health.
  • If you don?t know how to segment or create personas read David Rose?s Managing Content Marketing book and learn fast. Personas and segmentation is key to?email relevancy and relevant emails are the key to money.

Holiday Checkout Review

Now is no time to undertake a major checkout revision since you want code that WORKS, but testing your checkout?s response time across a CDN network?(where you get different checkout load reads from California, New York and Texas just to name 3) is a good idea. Focus on states where you do a lot of?business. If you haven?t moved images to Akamai or a similar ?edge network? think about doing so if your cart is slow in far-flung places, far-flung places that are important to your?business.

Your site MUST FLY or it will lose conversions. If your checkout is either slow, has too many steps or is hard to understand you will lose a lot of money. You are?at the holiday dance now since major checkout revisions can take months, so review what can be easily changed such as:

  • Addition of trust marks.
  • Coupon Code Popups (so customers don?t LEAVE to find a code).
  • Smaller images (in weight not necessarily size).
  • Clear stepped checkout status bar ( for clear chekout flow).
  • Return popup called ?easy returns? (better to answer objection/questions inside the checkout never move a customer OUT of the checkout to get answers).

Winning Hearts, Minds and Loyalty With Gamification

Uninterrupted deal flow is over. When all else is equal we buy from people we love. People we love never just ask for stuff, they give things too. Create?fun ideas, ask your customers for feedback and be sure to do some of what they share with you and let them know THEY created that idea. Entertain, enchant?and have fun and ?customers? become advocates and life is good.

Be sure to know WHEN to play and create games. After Halloween is riskier than before, but whether a game helps or hurts depends on the game and about 100 other things. If you?ve figured out how to gamify Christmas have at it.

Your customers will appreciate a new voice, idea and tone other than BUY NOW being shouted from every rooftop. We are about to revise my white paper this week, but if you are in a big hurry here is the ?trade a tweet? link:

Gamification:Winning Hearts, Minds and Loyalty Online

Create A Merchandising & Promotion Plan

We used to War Room 12 to 16 weeks of holiday promotions and our merchandise mix. You can?t do it the way we did because times have changed. Social networks changed the game. Outline what you want to accomplish and react to what happens the rest of the time. Figure a 50% create ideas and 50% respond to ideas split and see how close your year follows. I would error on the side of MORE curation and LESS unidirectional deal flow since that is the trend.

Unidirectional deal flow is when YOU think of a deal and put it out there for THEM to buy (read Social Media?s Magic Feedback Loops to know why distinctions between US and THEM are breaking down fast). We created polls asking what our customers wanted to be on sale and by?how much. That poll was in an email, but would play great now on Facebook supported by StumbleUpon (see data on which social net drives the?most traffic?on Thank You Revolution) and Twitter.

Hope these tips help. Time to batten down hatches and get ready for some FUN as we enter the first truly MOBILE Holidays.

Making The Most Of Your Advertising Efforts Through Social Media ...

Everybody is ready to try their hand with social media marketing. Mastering social media marketing is something that takes plenty of time, work, and dedication. But, there are a few easy ways to use this method to your advantage.

Never fear asking for assistance with a social media marketing campaign. This market is enormous; there are many designers and consultants that can prepare an entire strategy for you. They are expensive, so you will need to spend a lot if you choose to go this route.

Give people a reason to access and promote information from your site. Make your posts funny, and do not use terms that are overly confusing and technical. Make your content easy to understand; technical writing may not go over well.

It takes time and patience to construct a social media network. You won?t attract tens of thousands of followers in a day. It has happened in rare occurrences, but it is unlikely that you will receive viral following in just one night. So be aware that it will take time to gain followers.

Near the top of your blog, add a Facebook ?like? box. This can let people ?like? you on your Facebook page. When you have this box on your blog, it makes it easy for your visitors to show their appreciation without being distracted from your page. This simplifies the process and gives more people exposure to your business.

Don?t limit yourself to one site when starting your social media campaign. The more places you expose yourself, the more potential you have for success. Tools vary from site to site, and the only way you can take advantage of multiple tools is to use many sites.

The voice you utilize on social media networks is important. People use these sites to interact socially and to be with friends; they are not typically responsive to hard marketing speak. Try to level with your customers and use the kind of language they do if you wish to get better results.

These key pieces of info will help you get on the right track with regard to SMM. Social media is a new and evolving way to communicate with others. Learn to utilize every tool at your disposal and capture your audience with quality media.

All music should be accompanied by a light show. And, if said light show comes in the form of a three-foot tall self-contained iPod dock, all the better. iHome's iP76 LED Color Changing Speaker Tower is not just a catchy name any more, it's now a product you can actually purchase for $199. The unnecessarily tall iDevice dock is loaded with color changing LEDs that pulse, fade and blink in coordination with your tunes and you can even connect other media sources via Bluetooth. You can pick up the GlowTunes dock now direct from iHome or at unnamed "retailers nationwide." Check out the PR and video after the break.

Dempster says 'nothing imminent' on trade

By JAY COHEN

AP Sports Writer

updated 5:14 p.m. ET July 19, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - Ryan Dempster dropped down to one knee in the infield and carefully lobbed pitch after pitch to his son Brady. He hopped up for each grounder, gloved the ball and chased down Brady as he scampered up the first-base line at Wrigley Field.

All those trade rumors don't seem to be bothering him one bit.

Dempster is scheduled to start for the Chicago Cubs on Friday at St. Louis, and he doesn't know of any reason why he won't be on the mound at Busch Stadium. While trade rumors swirl around the right-hander, he remains focused on his next game with his current club.

"Nothing imminent, not that I know of," said Dempster, who can veto any deal. "I'm sure if they have something they'll come to me. But right now I'm just worried about trying to get ready for tomorrow's game."

Dempster is one of the best pitchers on the market ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. He has won five consecutive starts and leads the majors with a 1.86 ERA.

He will carry a 33-inning scoreless streak into the start against the Cardinals, an impressive run he admits to thinking about "all the time."

"I know I haven't given up a run in five starts," he said before the Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 4-2 on Thursday. "I'm not naive. Like I said when I had a no-hitter going before, I know that I have a no-hitter going. I know that I have it. I'm just trying to keep it going, for sure. When you don't give up any runs, you win games. So I like that."

The Cubs haven't won many games this year, which is why they're expected to trade Dempster and right-hander Matt Garza before the deadline. They have won 14 of 19 during a recent surge, but are still mired in fifth in the NL Central.

Dempster, who is in the last year of a $52 million, four-year contract, is 67-64 with a 3.72 ERA in nine years with Chicago. The Dodgers, Tigers and Braves all appear to be in the running for the two-time All-Star.

"It's flattering to know that other teams want you but at the same time I just worry about doing my job," he said.

Customer Service: How One Bad Experience Can Ruin Your Business

Last updated 17 hours ago

Sometimes even the companies praised for their continuous level of exemplary customer service can have a bad day.?

But that one bad day can cost them.

?

You may believe your company is exempt. You may believe that a friendly "hello" is all the customer service you need to provide to your clients. You may believe that no one will ever know if, on an off day, one of your employees or you mistreat a customer. And you would be gravely mistaken.?

?

When it comes to business survival, customer service has always played an integral role to business success. And today, if your business isn't laser-focused on customer service you'll find yourself floundering to find success.

Why you may wonder has customer service become so important to business success??

?

  • 70% of Americans are willing to spend an average of 13% more with companies they believe provide excellent customer service
  • 60% believe that businesses have not increased their focus on providing good customer service and among this group 25% actually think companies are paying less attention to service
  • 78% of consumers have bailed on a transaction or not made an intended purchase because of poor customer service
  • 59% will try a new brand or company for a better customer service experience

?

In addition to being able to steal customers away from the competition and getting existing customers to spend more money with you, let's look at some of the possible ramifications of NOT consistently providing exceptional customer service.

If you've ever read anything else I write about customer service, you'll know I'm a huge fan of Starbucks - and not just for their coffee but for their personalized customer service. Honestly, I can get coffee I like just as much at McDonald's but I don't. And here's why. I'm willing to pay more money for a cup of coffee at Starbucks not because I think the quality of the coffee is necessarily better (because honestly I add so much to my coffee it doesn't taste much like coffee anyways) but because the quality of service is SIGNIFICANTLY better. They smile, they engage, they actually look me in the eye and my favorite is that as a repeat customer they learn my name and my drink order. Talk about personalized service - who doesn't love that. At McDonald's - well, I'm lucky if I get even a remote hint of friendliness. But, as much as I praise and have praised Starbucks exceptional customer service even they are not without fault.?

?

Last week, due to an issue with their mobile app card reload feature, my bank account had enough pending transactions from Starbucks that it overdrafted my acount and froze all my money. In a panic, I called both my bank and Starbucks' customer service department. My bank said they would file a claim but they needed someone from Starbucks to call them to rush the process. I had 2 conversations with Starbucks' customer service department employees - neither conversation yielded that exemplary customer service I am so accustomed to with Starbucks. Instead of sympathy or empathy with the fact that their mobile app was going to cause me to have zero money for the next few days, all I received was a very curt "sorry, there's nothing we can do." Certainly not what you want to hear from a company who has tied all your money up and left you stranded with no funds for 3-5 days. Honestly, it wasn't the fact that they couldn't do anything that bothered me, it was the company's lack of ownership in the problem and the poor customer service. Even if they couldn't do anything, compassion goes a long way. I didn't even feel that either of these employees cared that their company was putting me in a bad situation. As a result, I made my voice heard through social media.?

?

Here's why this matters to you. Even for customers who have loyalty to your business, one bad experience may serious taint your business in their eyes. Ten years ago perhaps this did not matter as much since the impact was confined to their own personal circle of friends and family. With the Internet and social media, that would bad experience can spread virally across the web and you could end up with a disaster that taints your reputation for years to come.?

?

To put things in perspective, my broadcast of my situation on the Starbucks Facebook fan page certainly grabbed their attention as well as some of my friends and even those I don't know. But it wasn't truly damaging to their reputation. However, let's look at United Breaks Guitars - a lovely song that was written and broadcast via YouTube after United Airlines broke Dave Carroll's Taylor guitar and refused to take any part in acknowledging the situation or resolving it. Want to talk about the damage one bad experience can have - this YouTube video has over 12 MILLION views. Think that hasn't hurt United Airlines business? All because of ONE bad customer experience.

One bad customer experience can spread like wildfire across the Internet these days. Ten years ago you only had to worry about that person sharing their negative experience with close friends and family. Now they can share it with the world. And if they have a reach like ?Dave Carroll, you better watch out!

I'll conclude with the following quote from Jim Bush, Executive Vice President, World Service at American Express, who says:

?Getting service right is more than just a nice to do; it?s a must do.? American consumers are willing to spend more with companies that provide outstanding service? Ultimately, great service can drive sales and customer loyalty.?

Western Digital My Passport (2TB)

Portable hard drives typically distinguish themselves in one of two ways: speed or capacity. With its brisk USB 3.0 interface and enormous space, the Western Digital My Passport (2TB) ($249.99 direct) approaches this proverbial fork in the road and takes both paths. It's huge and quick, which is really what most users look for in a portable drive. But that's about all it has going for it - it doesn't quite shake things up. That said, the My Passport (2TB) is nonetheless a fine drive that, thanks to its huge capacity, will undoubtedly leave its users satisfied for a very, very long time.

Design and Features
Measuring .82 by 3.24 by 4.37 inches (HWD), the My Passport (2TB) is, true to its name, roughly the size of a passport. Assuming you haven't traveled to every single country on the planet, it's a bit thicker than an average passport. At a scant .49 pound, you can easily toss it into your bag or chinos without adding any noticeable heft. The My Passport (2TB) takes most of its design cues from the Western Digital My Passport Studio (2TB) ($299.99 list, 4 stars), feeling appreciably sturdy in my hand thanks to its compact size and smooth rounded edges, though the latter's anodized aluminum chassis accounts for a slightly heavier and overall more attractive final product. This isn't to say that the My Passport (2TB) is an eyesore? far from it. Its plastic chassis sports a pleasing smooth matte finish on its edges and underside that contrast nicely with the dotted pattern that adorns the lid. As was the case with the My Passport Studio, an embossed WD logo on the lid is noticeable but doesn't detract from the drive's aesthetic. While our test unit was black, the My Passport also comes in white, red, blue, and silver.

There's a USB Micro B port at the rear of the drive alongside an activity indicator that flashes intermittent bursts of white light whenever the drive's in use. The supplied USB cable can be plugged into either a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port. As far as connectivity goes, that's about it? the My Passport (2TB) doesn't support FireWire 800 like the My Passport Studio. If you're content with limiting yourself solely to a USB interface, then this shouldn't be a major issue. On the other hand, if your decision hinges on versatility and future-proofing, our current Editors' Choice for portable hard drives, theSeagate Backup Plus, is the drive to beat thanks to its interchangeable USM adapter.

Not that the My Passport (2TB) lacks versatility altogether. For instance, although it comes pre-formatted for NTFS, it can be formatted for Mac, giving it an edge over the Windows-onlyClickfree C6 Portable (1TB) ($150 street, 4 stars). There's some pre-installed software contained on the My Passport (2TB), including WD Drive Utilities (Diagnostics, Sleep Timer, Drive Erase), WD Security app for hardware encryption, and WD SmartWare. The latter is an easy to use backup program whose newly revamped interface makes backing up data and retrieving deleted files fairly straightforward endeavors. It's an impressive program, though not as much as the Seagate Dashboard software included with the Backup Plus, which incorporates social networking features into the user interface to a remarkable degree.

Performance
The My Passport (2TB) was a speedy performer overall, especially when using USB 3.0. In our PCMark 05 test, it churned out impressive scores of 6,016 (USB 3.0) and 3,078 (USB 2.0), putting it within relative striking distance of the Backup Plus (6,436 via USB 3.0; 3,125 via USB 2.0).

Using USB 3.0, The My Passport (2TB) copied our 1.22GB test folder in a brisk 15 seconds. This puts it exactly on par with the Backup Plus's USB 3.0 transfer speed (15 seconds). The Clickfree C6 Portable (1TB) didn't fare as well alongside the My Passport (2TB), with the latter flying past the Clickfree C6 Portable (1TB) (17 seconds). Additionally, the My Passport's (2TB) USB 3.0 transfer rate outperformed the My Passport Studio's (2TB) FireWire 800 transfer rate by a solid 4 seconds (19 seconds).

Although USB 2.0 predictably yielded slower speeds for the My Passport (2TB) (38 seconds), it nonetheless sprinted past the others in its class by varying degrees. It edged past the Backup Plus with two seconds to spare (40 seconds), and did so in an even more pronounced fashion versus the Clickfree C6 Portable (41 seconds). At the very bottom of the heap, the Western Digital My Passport for Mac (1TB) ($159.99 direct, 3.5 stars) with its sole USB 2.0 connection (47 seconds) was handily outpaced by the My Passport (2TB) by a significantly wider margin.

Rather than reinventing the wheel or introducing any groundbreaking innovations to the realm of portable hard drives, the Western Digital My Passport (2TB) simply tweaks what already exists. This is not a bad thing?far from it, since most users are mainly concerned with speed and capacity, and it nails both of these aspects. That said, it's nowhere near as versatile as our current Editors' Choice, the Seagate Backup Plus, which successfully combines future-proofing sensibilities with innovative social-networking aspects. For what is, though, the My Passport (2TB) is ultimately a fine choice.
