The Truth About Salt, Experts Weigh In | Greatist

Pass the salt, please. We?ve all said it before ? probably more than we think. While the recommended daily consumption of sodium is 2300mg, studies have shown that Americans consume well over that, with an average of about 3600mg per day ? and especially those between the ages of 19 and 30[][]. We?re actually consuming so much that the American Medical Association has openly suggested we reduce salt consumption all together[]. So, we get it: Sodium can be bad for us. But it?s not all that bad ? in fact, some amount is necessary for normal body function. So why should we care? Let?s take a closer look.

It?s A Salty, Salty World ? The-Need-to-Know

Salt and PepperAround?eighty percent of the sodium consumed by Americans comes from processed foods like cereals and baked goods (bet you didn?t know Cheerios and brownies are two salty culrpits)[]. The other eleven percent comes from shaking salt at the table or throwing in a few pinches to the frying pan while trying to imitate the latest Top Chef stars[][]. But it?s not just what we add ourselves that can be a problem ? processed foods are often high in salt, since it?s used as a preservative to keep food fresh longer.

So what is salt, exactly? Sodium is an element in table salt that is both necessary for certain body functions (more on that below), but that can also contribute to health issues like high blood pressure and heart disease when consumed in excess[][][].

So why not just cut out salt completely? For one thing, some salt is essential. Important vitamins and minerals containing salt like iodine and sodium chloride can help maintain fluid balance, body temperature, and nerve and muscle function[][][]. Salt is also necessary to maintain proper blood pH (or balance between acidity and basicity). And for the athletes among us, salt is essential in maintaining healthy blood pressure, so athletes should be wary of sodium deficiency from overhydrating before competitions[][][]. Cutting back on salt too much may even increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which can contribute to heart disease[].

We know ??it?s tricky! To break it down a bit further, here?s what three experts had to say.

Rumor Has It ? What the Experts Have To Say

The Experts:

Kent Berridge, a professor of neuroscience and psychology at University of Michigan who researches the brain bases of emotion, motivation, and reward to determine what drives pleasure, liking, wanting, addiction, and the structure of natural behavior.

Dr. Jeffrey Mechanick, an endocrinologist specializing in nutrition who practices at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC and is the author of ?The Complete Guide to Lifelong Nutrition.?

Jason Edmonds, a biomedical researcher who works in the pharmaceutical industry and studies bacterial resistance to antibiotics and biological mechanisms strengthening autoimmune disease pathology. Edmonds is also a competitive Olympic weightlifter and one of Greatist?s experts.

So let?s start with a basic one: What does salt really do?to the body, and why can it cause problems?

Jeffrey Mechanick: [Salt] is an essential nutrient ? it?s a chemical the body needs in order to function. So why does it cause problems? As we enter into a very recent phenomena of [consuming more and more processed foods] which contain added salt solely [for taste], we?re now overeating salt, more than our body [can handle]. As a result of all the extra salt, [fluids in the body compensate and increase]. As a result, blood pressure increases. But in general, across the board we don?t handle these high salt loads well. [In terms of causing disease] if you just associate salt consumption particularly among different ethnicities you see a higher rate of high blood pressure. As a result of [this high blood pressure], which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, you see more cardiovascular disease and more [cardiac] mortality.

Jason Edmonds: Excessive salt intake is probably best known for [its correlation] with high blood pressure and?[its related] problems [like cardiovascular disease]. One theory for how this happens is that the kidneys sense [excessive salt in the body], signaling [our hormones to pump out more water and fill up the empty space] and this consequently increases blood volume. Some subsets of the population are at greater risk of suffering the ill effects of excessive sodium (African Americans, and those with high blood pressure,?diabetes, and kidney disease).?It?s also?worth noting that the association between salt and blood pressure in healthy adults with normal blood pressure?is a matter of some contention. Apparently some studies have failed to uncover the correlation between high dietary sodium and increased risk of hypertension, especially in normal, healthy adults that don?t fall into a high-risk category.

So is salt a necessity for our diet? And why do we like it so much?

Kent Berridge: Salt is a required part of a healthy diet. If the body loses salt, strong biological mechanisms kick in that give us an intense craving for it. Our normal liking for mild saltiness, and our [physiological need and desire for intense amounts of salt when deprived], are both products of our evolution.?In the past, salty food has represented an opportunity to stock up on salts for the body, so we like it. Sometimes our ancestors had to go for long periods without salt. That created emergency mechanisms that make finding and eating salt a higher priority in states of need. Salty pretzels are normally nice but seawater or a handful of salt is nasty.?But in a ?salt-need state,? all of them start to taste nicer (because the body needs them).

Jason Edmonds: Salt (sodium chloride) is essential for maintaining a normal
[chemical balance] in the body. This is important for maintaining proper hydration levels as well as for proper functioning of bodily systems. We tend to crave savory foods and typically enjoy the taste of salt. Like sugars, salts were probably not nearly as abundant or easy to find during much of our evolutionary history. For this reason, we probably evolved to enjoy and crave?the taste of sugar, salts, fat, etc., because when they were present we needed to ensure we got out fill. We?ve retained this craving for savory, sweet, and fatty foods, but in our modern culture ? especially within?industrialized nations ? foods rich in salt, sugars, and dietary fats are abundant and readily available. As a result, we still crave them as if we?re in a feast or famine state and so we end up consuming in excess of what we need to maintain proper physiological?balance and health.

What?s the best way to cut back intake?

Jeffrey Mechanick: The first recommendation is to [learn how to] read nutrition labels and be aware of the salt and sodium content in processed foods. Number two is [to familiarize yourself] with healthy eating [practices]. A diet that?s high in fresh fruits and vegetables would be lower in sodium. [Evidence has] demonstrated that this can help to decrease blood pressure and the risks associated with it.?

Jason Edmonds: It?s important to moderate salt intake mostly to reduce the chance of developing hypertension ? which significantly increases the chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). In addition, salt has also been correlated with other problems such as stomach cancer and?exacerbating kidney disease. The best way to cut back on salt intake is to limit consumption of prepared or processed foods, which are usually very high in sodium, preservatives, and other assorted unhealthy ingredients. Also [try to] resist [reaching for] the salt shaker. Many of our?meals already contain sodium-rich sauces, gravy, and seasonings, so shaking?salt onto those mashed potatoes along with a ladle full of gravy unnecessarily increases the sodium content.?Choosing one or the other, or?eliminating both and seasoning with crushed black pepper [or other fresh or dried herbs] are healthier alternatives for those consuming high levels of sodium in their diets?(particularly for those predisposed to ? or already dealing with ? hypertension).?

With this said, the scientific literature on the benefits of reducing salt intake are mixed. There?s evidence?showing that?reducing sodium can?lead to a?modest but clinically relevant?decrease in blood pressure.

[Some research also suggests] that the risks from high salt intake are overblown and excessive reduction can also be harmful. Many of these studies conclude? that reducing salt only lowers blood pressure slightly to moderately, and the reductions aren?t [significant enough] to change the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.?Some of these studies?also say that salt reduction won?t reduce risk of hypertension or cardiovascular disease in people with normal blood pressure.?

What are your thoughts on salt consumption research?

Jason Edmonds: My opinion is that the average (even healthy) person should reduce their consumption of processed foods [regardless of their salt consumption or risk of related diseases].?These foods contribute to a large fraction of many people?s daily salt consumption, but also typically contain other unhealthy ingredients such as unhealthy saturated and trans fats, high sugar, and preservatives. By limiting these foods [such as butter and margarine], you?ll also be limiting a whole host of other ingredients that, in excess, can increase the chances of developing hypertension, [cardiovascular disease], and other health problems.

The Takeaway

To cut down on salt intake, pay attention to the brands you choose, which can vary greatly in sodium usage. Read nutrition labels and learn how to interpret sodium content (e.g. ?unsalted? foods still contain natural sodium but are made without sodium). Avoid processed foods (cut back on those french fries and even cottage cheese), cook with less salt by trying different substitutes and ditch that salt shaker from the table[].

Former official denies Israel poisoned Arafat

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A former Israeli official on Wednesday denied suspicions that Israel poisoned Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as France prepared to begin an investigation into his possible murder following a Swiss lab's claim that it found traces of a deadly substance on his belongings.

Dov Weisglass, chief of staff to then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at the time of Arafat's death in 2004 and a key participant in deliberations surrounding Arafat's worsening health, said Israel had no reason to physically harm the Palestinian leader. For the last two years of Arafat's life, Israel confined him to his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah, accusing him of encouraging a violent Palestinian uprising at the time.

"Israel did not have any hand in this," Weisglass told Israel's Army Radio station on Wednesday, even while calling Arafat "one of Israel's worst enemies."

"We did not physically hurt him when Arafat was in his prime ... so all the more so we had no interest in this kind of activity when he was politically sidelined," he said.

Weisglass said that he and another Israeli official were dining in Brussels with the EU's foreign policy chief at the time, Javier Solana, when the diplomat's cell phone rang call close to midnight: Then-Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia was on the line saying that Arafat needed immediate medical attention at a Ramallah hospital. Would Israel allow him to leave his compound?

Weisglass said he called Sharon at his home and he immediately approved the request.

The next morning, Weisglass said, the European diplomat called him to say Palestinian doctors in Ramallah said Arafat was very ill and needed to be evacuated for better treatment in Europe.

Weisglass said Sharon consulted with intelligence officials, who believed Arafat was merely suffering from complications related to the flu. But a Palestinian informant close to Arafat's doctors in Ramallah said Arafat had only days to live.

Sharon immediately permitted Arafat to seek medical treatment in France so Israel could not be accused of exacerbating his illness, Weisglass said.

Arafat, 75, died about two weeks later on Nov. 11, 2004, in a French military hospital outside Paris of what doctors called a massive stroke.

According to French medical records, he had suffered inflammation, jaundice and a blood condition known as disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC.

But the records were inconclusive about what brought about the DIC, which has numerous causes including infections, colitis and liver disease.

The uncertainty sparked speculation about the cause of death, including the possibility of AIDS or poisoning. Many in the Arab world believe he was killed by Israel.

Raanan Gissin, a close confidant to Ariel Sharon, said as the second Intifada raged on, Israeli officials repeatedly raised the option of assassinating Arafat, but Sharon always rejected that route.

"The idea was not to kill Arafat, but to change the Palestinian leadership," Gissin told The Associated Press.

Israel "never touched a hair on his head," he added.

Weisglass said medical assessments immediately after his death found no traces of poison on his body.

Arafat's widow, Suha, filed a legal complaint in France ?where she is a citizen ? after a Swiss institute detected traces of a rare, lethal substance on objects belonging to the Palestinian leader. Arab satellite TV station Al-Jazeera approached the Swiss lab on behalf of Mrs. Arafat, who provided the lab with her husband's clothing and other belongings.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Arafat's French lawyer said that French authorities have agreed to launch a murder investigation into Arafat's death.

Arafat's successor, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, has given the green light for the Swiss experts to exhume Arafat's remains and conduct an autopsy. Officials say they are still waiting for Mrs. Arafat to give the final go-ahead.

"Until now, they did not tell us when they are coming, but we are ready to help them and to insure full cooperation," said Tawfik Tirawi, the Palestinian official in charge of investigating Arafat's death. "Our work and theirs will continue until we reach the truth."

Israeli Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon, who was the army's chief of staff when Arafat died, also denied involvement Wednesday in an Army Radio interview.

"It sounds to me like Arabian tales from One Thousand and One Nights," Yaalon said.

Taking the Heat On Huffington Post - Perils of Divorced Pauline

Used for PPD ? Post Publication Depression

My latest piece for Huffington Post Divorce ran last week. It was cross-posted on the AOL home page so it generated a lot of comments ? over 700 at this point. In the post, I owned my shortcomings in my first marriage. I?m not a 12-stepper, but I was inspired by the 12-step idea of making amends to people you have harmed. Ideally, you make an amends either via letter or in public to the harmee. But if doing so would create more damage for any reason, you don?t.

Since my ex is a high-conflict personality, any admission of wrongdoing on my part would fuel more drama. It could also be something he could use in future litigation. Protocol for interacting with high-conflict exes is not to reveal anything that could be taken out of context and used against you. It simply isn?t safe or advisible.

I tried to make this clear in the article. ?Many people didn?t get the concept, or didn?t carefully read the piece. Some people skewered me: I was passive-aggressive; I lacked humility because I didn?t make an amends in person; I was a woman and all women think they?re perfect.

Some people had a different take. They said the article was refreshingly positive and showed maturity. Some felt that the amends was heartfelt and wished their ex said the same things to them.

Because the responses were so varied, it was almost as if people were reading different articles. Which reminded me of troll expert John Suler?s theory on trolls: they project their own issues, especially ones from unresolved relationships, onto the writer. Sometimes they even envision the writer as someone with which they?re embroiled in conflict ? a mother, sister, ex-wife, a coworker, etc.

Also, one could make the case that readers of the HuffPost Divorce section are not the most well-adjusted lot and are conflict-prone themselves.

Any sort of confessional writing leaves one open to attack. Divorce still carries a stigma and publicly airing one?s dirty divorce laundry invites extreme skewering. I know this, and I try to prepare for being slammed when I read the comments. But reading these latest comments made me feel particularly vile, like I needed to do a full-body loofah to scrape off the metaphorical garbage that the hecklers had thrown at me.

So I decided to gather my bruised psyche off the floor and go in pursuit of some levity. I found it when I scrolled through the comments. Here is a selection: balanced, hostile, bizarre, and complete non sequitors.

The Positive

1.??Finally, a divorce article on HuffPost where someone talks about their own mistakes instead of someone else?s. That is what a failed relationship is: two people making stupid mistakes, not just a victim and the abuser. Thank you for a very honest telling of your mistakes. Its not as if you are the only one who has ever made them.?

2. ?This is one of the most helpful and meaningful posts to appear here in ages. Making peace with your ex-spouse, at least in your heart if nothing else, is the only way to be free of the past and enjoy a happy healthy future, post-divorce. It is impossible to be completely happy otherwise, and any wise person will run in the opposite direction to avoid dating someone who still harbors bitterness toward their former spouse.?

The Negative

3. ?Don?t forget ?I apologize for not putting out often enough? ? It?s not a stretch to think is where a lot of the other issues likely originated.?

4. ?You really sound like an unbelievable bitch? at least you can see where you were wrong, I?ve learned from this article.?

5. ?Are you sorry for beggering the guy with alimony and child support? No. We, out here, are not the ones you should be crying to, kiddo, so grow up, meet face to face, and tell him what you claim, to the rest of the world, that you?d like to tell him. Just, please, don?t bother us again.?

6. ?She probably doesnt believe any of it but made good money from the publication.?

7. ?She was definitely the cause of the split. I can?t prove it based on the article, but I would stake my life on it.?

The Bizarre

8. ?Didn?t know what true happiness was until I married her and then it was to late until we got divorced and I found it again ? I dated her sister and told her after we got divorced that her sister was better in bed than she was ? She has never been so mad about anything in her life as that ? I dated her Attorney who was handleing her divorce also, but not sleep together until it was final ??

9. ?My exwife didn?t find out that I had sex with three of her closests friends
till after we were separated. She only found out because one of their cars were in my drive
way all night. Then she had the nerve to beat on the door that morning and demand to
know why I was having sex with her friends.?

10. ?Apology is nothing without reparation. Send money! For me, as a woman who totally accepts my part in creating a flawed marriage but not part in the giving-up on that marriage, I yearn for an apology and I?d be very open to accepting it if my former husband sent $200,000.?

The Bitter

11. ?I?d like to tell my ex he completely lived up to being the ass I figured he probably always was.?

The Utlitarian

12. ?Being a single man, I can tell you that it is not economical to remain single. You really take a bath on your Taxes.?

The Woman-Haters

13. ?Feminists pride has destroyed so many marriages across the country. It?s responsible for why there are so many single mothers in America.?

14. ?Why is it that feminists said they don?t need men because of alternate forms of having children yet they never exploit these avenues? Adoption and insemination are primarily used by lesbians and couples with medical conditions.?

15.??Many females are by nature mentally unstable, inherently deceitful. My dad, a geneticist/ psychiatrist; Wrote a book in the 70?s chemically outlining women?s brains. He discovered females experience chemical changes identical to schizophrenia, 14 days of every month. Prepubescent, to menopause, Bluntly, women are clinically insane half their lives.?

There are so many fabulously outrageous comments from what to choose a favorite, but if pressed, I?d have to go with #15.

Should I Take the HuffPost Heat or Get Out of the Kitchen?

Despite the fact that reading HuffPost comments is akin to being disemboweled, I don?t intend to stop writing for the site. My editor is lovely; being published on HuffPost drives trafffic to my site; being cross-linked to AOL is a great boost to my middle-aged ego.

I?d love to hear other bloggers? experiences of being lambasted for their opinions. Have you developed a thick-enough hide so the barbs don?t bother you? Do you write mostly non-controversial material so you don?t inspire backlash? Do you think that bloggers should be prepared to take the heat or get out of the blogging kitchen?

Two dyings, Two deaths ? The Hobart Chinaman

We gathered round the bed, we had before but at a different bed. We had gathered in a ward at the PA. All families do. Its what makes families, families.

Mum was dying. Her descent had been swift, no longer the feisty, sometimes argumentative lady who had given me my outspokenness, my less than chinaman obsequiousness, the defiance my father had so disliked. Over several months her decline accelerated, the inevitable process of life moving to death.

I dreaded and at the same time longed for her to be at peace. I had memories stored which were of little use to me now, memories of my father?s passing all those years ago, close to forty.

He too had lain in a hospital bed, resenting being there, wanting to be at home. Walking in there, he?d realized early on that he was not going to walk out. For me at the time, yet to be twenty one, I had no idea. My life full of the promise of bright years to come, never once glimpsed the shadows of the other side. With Mum working, visits to the hospital were squeezed in between college lectures, a commute from the suburbs into town then back home again. It was a very long six months.

Mum too lay there. She had been brought by ambulance from the aged care home. She had taken a turn, and for safety she had been brought in for a check up.

Within days of my return five hundred miles north to the badlands of the Fitzroy River delta, Mum had been returned to her home, said to be stable, but it wasn?t so.

The news came to me across the wires, or maybe the airwaves, I can?t now be sure. She had been returned to hospital, condition pneumonia, situation critical.

I flew. Flew to her beside and the little knot of family were gathered there.

I hadn?t flown as quickly to Dad?s side, in Melbourne at the Royal.

He had become increasingly cranky, had made inexplicable changes to his will, on multiple hospital note pads, his handwriting scrawling yet legible, the letter formation bolder and rounder than his usual tight cursive script. He held court with a string of visitors, mostly friends, backgrounded in the church, but was at his most magnificent best in front of family. Little was I to know that this theatre was the final production for the family which I believed I could rely. When Dad left this stage, the audience would dissipate. Whilst Dad?s strength came from the extended family he had been brought up in, the strength wilted with his passing. I noted, but never once understood that he was both pushing and pulling the whole family scene. Like a puppeteer making the performance and at the same time viewing it. All I could see was the Wayang Kulit puppet shadows on the stretched buffalo skin screen of life, the flickering light provided by Dad?s ebbing energy. When he passed the show was over.

Time passed more rapidly years later at Mum?s bedside. There wasn?t anything to say to her, from the world we were in, the one she was leaving. For assurance we stroked her hands and held them. Alive but asleep we watched over her, listening to the shallowest of breathing, each breath somehow more difficult, the breathing which through life we take for granted, now reduced to an effort. For each might well be the last. Wordless between us, it?s the first time the children have seen death approaching, looking towards the inevitable end we all face.

?What are your wishes through the night if there?s an emergency, Mr. Poon? I am asked away from Mum?s beside. ?Do you wish us to take resuscitation efforts??

It takes a few moments to grasp the nettle of the registrar?s meaning. My mind engages faster though, thinking ?What the fuck of course you need to, this is my Mum you are talking about!? But he offers us the chance to go sit and chat it over in a waiting area lined with vinyl covered lounges.

We sit and talk, or rather I talk and the children listen. Life comes to this, the best it can be is that those who love you best decide. All those years of hearing accepting and rejecting Mum?s advice come down to this. Will her training and genetics inform this decision?

In the afternoon of a December 23 there were also decisions to be made. had arrived to see Dad. None else was there. I looked around at the other patients, propped up in bed or dozing in front of ridiculously elevated televisions. Being a public ward, drawable curtain screens hung by metal loops from stainless steel rails to provide a semblance of visual privacy, the swinging clanking of the loops being drawn, inevitably tuning up one?s ears to tune in on others secret.

We had been saying nothing, but if it was something, it is now nothing.

?Where?s the pan?? he said, his gaunt features taut with the pain of great discomfort. I looked around, in the bottom drawer of the grey metal bedside dresser, then under the bed. Slippers, a dropped handful of tissues, a waste paper bin and two writing pad papers, which I picked up and stuffed in my pocket.

?Can?t see one, Dad?, was all I could offer, ?I could go get one from down the hall?

?No, no, no time, hurry, hurry, fi de,? he breathed, the force of the statement stressed in the cantonese

?Get something, anything! I can?t wait,?

The tissue box atop the dresser seemed ideal. I reefed the few tissues remaining from slit, and pinched in the sides of the box to make a cardboard pannikan. Meanwhile Dad had made an attempt to untie his pyjama draw string and shuffle his pants down. He moved onto his left side facing away from me. I was never prepared for the sight of his emaciated thighs, hips and thigh bones almost visible through his pale yellowing skin. He had not been eating, and unable to exercise he looked as though he had been starving. He was no burden to lift onto the cardboard so that his buttocks were cupped. Somehow I had managed to reef the curtains around. Swish, clatter. The privacy was enveloping. The look of relief on his face was enormous as he relieved himself. The smell overpowering. I used the tissues I had hauled from the box to wipe him clean. A none to thorough job. I extracted the now full tissue box and delicately dropped it into the waste paper bin from under the bed.

Wordlessly I grabbed the bin, and as I looked for the slit in the curtains to exit, a nurse entering showed me where it was,

?0k, I?ll take over now,? she said? as I headed for the lavatory with my bin.

It took some time to work out how to dispose of cardboard box, all the tissues and then clean up. I felt no shame, though looking back it must have been adrenaline that kept me going.

Adrenaline kicked in as I sat at the PA with the children pondering what to do for Mum, resuscitate or palliate. It?s not the children?s decision, this time, though perhaps being present might steel them for such in the future. Who knows? How do we tell when hope of life has flown. Comforted in the knowledge that Mum?s lifelong faith has prepared her for this time, I decide, no heroics. It?s a decision the registrar accepted with equanimity, the children leave and I stay to sit at Mum?s bedside through the night.

The lights dim through the whole ward, the staffing changes to night shift. I draw up another chair beside mine and rest my feet on it.

I settle in for the night. I prop my hand holding her?s on the bedside. Green and red lights hold or flicker on bed heads, in the darkness to which my eyes become accustomed. My phone lights up, embarrassingly causing the my side of Mum?s bed to be illuminated by the unmistakable mobile glow of the text.

?We support whatever decision you make Dad, Timbi?. I cry.

Holding Mum?s hand I tell her that I am here, and that it?s ok for her to go. I am intensely aware of my aloneness. I tell her that I will be ok alone, Dad and Jere Shing having already gone ahead. She is breathing more and more shallowly. I can hear her rattling, the fluids winning in the race to be pumped away from her lungs. It?s not easy to hear, but then again we are born after floating in our mother?s womb, lungs filled with liquid, it?s to there my Mum now returns. A final breath and she is gone.

Tears well in my eyes. I am happy for her, sad for me. I sense the emptiness of the world and the coolness creeping through Mum?s body.

As I walked back from disposing of the bin contents and washed up, the curtains were still drawn. I can?t recall if Dad was lying there peacefully, or whether he was already dead? I want to think that he was lying peacefully and that sometime after I came back he died as I watched over him. Or maybe I did and I can?t now recall, but why? Perhaps it was that he was already dead and that to make sense of my guilt I conveniently forget or scramble? These are not easy thoughts.

What remains, is sitting there and pondering, for an unknown time, realizing the burden of responsibility I felt, my Mum and my brother. Years to be lived in Dad?s shadow. A nurse comes after sometime and I tell her that I think my Dad is dead. She confirms he is, and after time to compose myself, Dad?s body is taken away, and I leave.

A nurse and I clean Mum?s body and change the sheets. I have told the children and in the dead of night they come to spend time with their Ah Ma for a last time. We leave before Mum?s body is taken from the ward.

Bad science behind unconstitutional US executions

When US courts refuse to accept problems associated with IQ tests it can make the difference between execution and life imprisonment

FEW topics invoke such passionate feelings in the US as the death penalty, especially when applied to convicts with the intellectual capacity of children.

In 2002, the US Supreme Court ruled that executing people with an intellectual disability was unconstitutional, citing a "national consensus" against it. Unfortunately the ruling failed to end the practice, in that it left it up to individual states and courts to decide how to assess intellectual disability.

Those assessments are often flawed. Many courts fail to accept scientific facts on the limitations of IQ testing, such as inevitable measurement errors. Inmates are also on death row because their IQ happened to be assessed using old tests (see "Death by IQ: US inmates condemned by flawed tests").

Convicts pleading intellectual disability must also prove that they have significant deficits in basic life skills, such as dealing with money. Assessment of this is, if anything, a bigger problem.

Texas, which executes more people than any other state, is home to some particularly egregious practices. For example, though validated tests of life skills exist, Texan courts favour standards that have no scientific basis. These include vague considerations such as the ability to tell lies and whether people who know the defendant think he or she is "mentally retarded". This is absurd, turning a complex clinical judgement over to witnesses with no specialist training.

Some Texan courts also accepted expert witness testimony from psychologist George Denkowski, who argued that life-skills scores for people from impoverished backgrounds should be adjusted upwards because they were brought up in an environment in which skills such as hygiene were not valued.

Denkowksi was stopped from making assessments in April 2011, but by then 14 of the men he assessed were on death row and two had already been executed.

The final injustice is that only people who had the deficits from childhood are exempt from execution. A convict mentally disabled by a brain injury suffered as an adult cannot seek clemency.

It's time the Supreme Court was presented with a case allowing it to clean up this mess of its own creation.

Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) August 14, 2012 - Crystal Limousines & Tours, a leading Los Angeles & Orange County limousine service, recently added a slew of new tour packages to their suite of limo services. Their most popular additions include 6 to 8 hour Southern California Wine Tours and 6 to 8 hour Southern California Brewery Tours, as well as an expansion of their "as directed" sightseeing tours. All 3 types of tour packages are available by limousines, executive vans or mini bus rentals. All new tour packages offer deep savings on sightseeing tours in the most popular Southern California cities (Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Diego, Newport Beach, etc).

Any one of the Crystal Limousines & Tours new tour packages are intended to provide customers with the advantage of luxury entertainment at extremely affordable flat rates. The sightseeing tours are popular with travelers seeking more fun things to do in Southern California. The brewery and wine tours are popular with both local and out of town guests. They are available by "as directed" limousine services where customers can hire their own tour guides or tell their chauffeur which breweries or wineries they would like to tour. Customers can choose which tour package from http://www.limos-la.com and place a reservation directly from the website.

"We've tried to develop tour packages that are affordable and support local businesses. This way more people can enjoy this type of comfort when visiting Southern California, taking brewery and wine tours, or whatever they want to do. Our goal is to keep them safe while out on the town and help customers experience more fun things to do in Southern California. Many people think that limousines are just for weddings, prom, quinceaneras, etc., but luxury transportation is for all types of occasions that involve not spending time with friends and loved ones. They are for people that do not want to drink and drive; not deal with traffic and parking; experience hands free driving while entertaining friends and clients. Our limousine company provides them with a stress-free experience."

Crystal Limousines & Tours understands the demands of the economy and wants people to know that luxury transportation does not have to break their budgets. Customers can enjoy a night on the town or luxurious bus tour at their leisure. "Our services are priced to save people money - opposed to everyone transporting themselves - and let customers enjoy each others company before and after their events".

Crystal Limousines & Tours services Los Angeles, Orange County, Temecula, San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Their new Southern California wine and brewery tours range from $299.00 (10 to 14 passengers) to $699.00 (20 to 24 passengers) for six to eight hour tours of Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside and San Bernardino areas. San Diego and Temecula tours ranging from $348.00 to $749.00 for six to eight hour tours in the same types of vehicles. "We have tour packages that are cost effective for small and larger groups. These are perfect for brewery or wine tours between Los Angeles and San Diego, as well as sightseeing throughout Southern California."

In addition to their own packages, Crystal Limousines & Tours has partnered with other local companies to help customers with fun things to do when traveling to Southern California, and to save money in addition to the new tour packages. One of their partner specials include savings on wine tasting and purchases at a popular Temecula winery. Customers can register for their newsletter to receive special limo coupons at their website and blog; companies are welcome to send partnership requests through their Southern California blog: http://www.limos-la.com/blog/contact-us/.

Look For Fixed Rate ISAs And Aid Your Finances - The Finance ...

Tax havens were once the distinctive domain from the moneyed handful of; the average investor had nor enough time, the income, nor the actual solicitors necessary to disguise cash from the tax man. In 1999 the government attempted to decrease this inequity simply by making the Individual Savings Account ISA.

ISAs were of two kinds, the stocks and shares ISA along with the cash ISA. The actual stocks and shares ISA allowed the small investor to put his after-tax revenue into funds along with other small investors and buy equity shares; the gains were not taxed. Of course some funds invested more prudently than others. A few lost money. For the majority of,however cash ISAs were safer.

The cash ISA, such as the stocks and shares ISA, had been formed from after-tax income and also the gathering interest was tax free. In bank financial savings accounts the cash ISA could be certain to give a profit. After all, for almost all purposes, money ISAs and regular bank savings accounts managed virtually the same way; the individual?s cash stayed at the bank and wouldn?t go negative (unless you counted for inflation, obviously).

Currently the Bank of England rate for personal savings deposits is at or around a half per cent. Despite the actual tax savings, ordinary cash ISAs cannot depend on much more than that. The good news is for the small investor there is the?fixed rate ISAs. These ISAs are savings bonds sold at a assured fixed rate of interest for a certain time period. In contrast to the regular cash ISA, the deposit cannot be added to during that period; however, while initial acquisitions of the cost savings bonds tend to be limited by the total amount allowed for cash ISAs, or ?5,340, that amount can be combined with the individual?s additional ISAs to purchase more savings bonds.

These?fixed rate ISAs, or savings bonds, can be simply obtained online. A number of bank websites market them. Several online sites offer listings exhibiting the many banks and their cited interest rates. At present, those rates are as high as 4% for conditions lasting three or four years. However be careful here. Almost all is not as it seems. Some of these prices are misleading. Be mindful the ?limited-period bonus?. That 4% the bank claims for four years might be just 4% for the very first year and 2% for the three leftover, hence browse the prospectus meticulously.

Tax free Individual Savings Accounts certainly are a great means for the small investor to protect their money from taxes. There are a number of different kinds of ISAs, but the safest would be the?fixed rate ISAs. These cost savings bonds tie the money down for extended durations, but they pay off higher rates. The modest investor may need to look carefully at these rates just before purchasing the savings bonds; the ?limited-period bonus? may result in.

In-House Business Innovation Requires a New Mantra | Rock The ...

It seems to be an accepted fact these days that big companies normally innovate by buying a startup with innovative products, rather than focusing on in-house innovations. This is a good thing for entrepreneurs and investors, who can win big, but it?s not a given. I see many startups who seem satisfied with a ?me too? approach, building yet another social network or e-commerce site, rather than being truly innovative.

Much has been published on this subject, including a recent book ?Look at More: A Proven Approach to Innovation, Growth, and Change?? by Andy Stefanovich, which is really a guide to established companies for unleashing creativity within their organizations. He asserts that the problem is lack of inspiration, and he supports this with twenty years of real case studies from his own experience.

The good news is that most entrepreneurs and startups have more inspiration than almost anything else, and it sometimes leads to success despite their lack of resources and business skills. Yet even entrepreneurs need to focus on the most effective way to unleash innovation, and maximize their chances for success.

Andy offers a simple mantra for innovation, expressed as ?Look at more stuff; think about it harder.? This mantra is complemented by a framework known as the five M?s, which are five key principles for unleashing creativity in any environment:

1. Mood.?Inspiration and creativity requires the right context of attitudes, feelings, and emotions. Every business leader who wants innovation must constantly monitor and set the proper mood for the environment. You can set the right mood by purposefully disrupting the status quo, initiating change, asking provocative questions, and listening.

2. Mindset.?This is the intellectual foundation of creativity, the baseline capacity each of us has for getting inspired, staying inspired, and thinking differently. Four thinking disciplines which produce a creative, inspired mindset include changing your perspective, taking risks, finding your passion, and challenging assumptions to embrace ambiguity.

3. Mechanisms.?These are the tools and processes of creativity that help you engineer inspiration into the way you work and empower your organization to embrace the kind of behavior that fosters innovation. Four key steps include building a context, generating ideas, filtering ideas, and building a blueprint for implementing the best ideas.

4. Measurement.?Even creativity needs guidance and critical feedback on the qualitative and quantitative performance of individuals and organizations. Measurements send a strong signal of what is important and where people should focus their passion and energy. In addition to measuring results, you need to measure mood, mindset, and the mechanisms above.

5. Momentum.?This is accomplished by the active championing and celebrating of inspiration and creativity that foster a self-reinforcing cycle for increasing innovation. Momentum is an organizational priority for inspired leaders who have a clear understanding of the other four M?s.

Not everyone has to be a leader for innovation to work. Research has indicated that followers are just as important to consider as leaders when thinking about creating the mood and momentum for creativity, inspiration, and innovation. Likewise, the right mindset alone isn?t enough. You have to be able to convince others and sell your ideas.

Thus, even entrepreneurs must not assume that their efforts and their team will be creative and innovative. ?Me too? startups don?t get funded, and they certainly don?t get bought for a premium by the sleeping giants who are looking for outside innovation to kick-start their growth again. Thus I suggest that every entrepreneur and every startup review their own environments for the five M?s, to avoid getting tagged as a ?has been? before they even ?have been.?

Ugandan's stunning marathon win as curtain falls on Games

Marathon man Stephen Kiprotich delivered Uganda's second ever Olympics gold medal on Sunday, celebrating victory in the shadow of Buckingham Palace as the curtain slowly dropped on the 2012 Games.

Kiprotich timed 2hr 08min 01sec on the spectacular course around the streets of central London, with two-time defending world champion Abel Kirui claiming silver in 2:08.27.

Another Kenyan, long-time leader Wilson Kipsang, took bronze in 2:09.37.

"I am very happy to win a medal for my country. I love my people. Uganda are very happy because we haven't won a medal," said Kiprotich.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, meanwhile, declared the London Olympics had been a "dream for sports-lovers", praising organisers for delivering an "athletes' Games."

"I am a very happy and grateful man," Rogge said.

"London promised an athletes' Games and that's exactly what we got. History has been written by many, many athletes -- the double treble of Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Sir Chris Hoy, Ben Ainslie, Andy Murray winning his first major title... I could go on."

The final day of action before a star-studded closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium will see the last 15 medals go up for grabs.

The United States, who are likely to finish on top of the medal table after losing out to China four years ago, should add to their haul with gold in the men's basketball final.

The Americans' Dream Team of NBA stars will be chasing a 14th gold medal and their fifth in sixth Olympiads when they face Spain.

The Americans have run through the tournament undefeated, just as they did in 2008 when they beat Spain 118-107 in the Beijing final.

Five members of that team and five from the US 2010 world championship team are in the London line-up.

The US team is 61-1 since settling for bronze in 2004 and revamping the programme to create the 2008 "Redeem Team" and the current US squad of NBA multi-millionaires, whose dynasty inspires top efforts from every rival.

Meanwhile the final medals in boxing will be decided along with golds in women's modern pentathlon, men's water polo, volleyball and freestyle wrestling.

Attention will then turn to Sunday's closing ceremony, which is being billed as a diverse "Symphony of British Music".

The Spice Girls, George Michael, Muse and Ed Sheeran are among the acts expected to play at the ceremony which will feature more than 4,000 performers, including 380 schoolchildren.

"We want it to be the best after-show party there has ever been," artistic director Kim Gavin said. "Any more than that and we would spoil the surprise."

The ceremony will see London hand over to the Rio 2016 Games, and the Olympic flame -- which has been alight at the east London stadium for two weeks -- will be extinguished.

The ceremony's pre-show entertainment begins at 1900 GMT, with the main ceremony, from 2000 GMT, scheduled to last up to three hours.

Iran earthquakes kill at least 180, injure 1,300

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Two strong earthquakes leveled villages and damaged homes in northwestern Iran on Saturday, killing at least 180 people and injuring more than 1,350 others, state TV reported. Thousands of people spent the night outdoors as aftershocks rattled the area.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that Saturday's first quake at 4:53 p.m. (1223 GMT) had a magnitude of 6.4 and struck 37 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 kilometers (6.2 miles). Its epicenter was a region between the towns of Ahar and Haris, about 200 miles (500 kilometers) northwest of the capital Tehran, according to Khalil Saei, local Crisis Committee chief, the TV report said.

The second quake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck 11 minutes later, the U.S.G.S. reported. Its epicenter was 29 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Tabriz at a depth of 6.1 miles (9.8 kilometers).

The quakes hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province, the TV report said. At least six villages were totally leveled, and 60 others sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent, it said.

At least 10 aftershocks jolted the same area and were felt in a wide region near the Caspian Sea, causing panic among the population.

Saei urged people in the quake region to stay outdoors and spend the night at parks and open spaces in anticipation of more aftershocks. Authorities feared the death toll could rise as rescuers were still trying to reach people trapped under rubble and had not yet reacher some more remote villages.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one earthquake every day on average, although the vast majority are so small they go unnoticed.

In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam.

File Sharing Security Worries Surface in Recent Survey - Business ...

Online file sharing is a convenient and simple means to transfer documentation and other data from one person to another and it has become pretty common for people to use unmanaged, personal-use file sharing systems online. This makes them a pretty terrific way for information to get stolen from your business.

A recent?survey conducted by Symantec?revealed that ??small business employees are increasingly adopting unmanaged, personal-use online file sharing solutions without permission from IT.? This behavior was found to be driven mostly by the widespread adoption of online services, such as DropBox and YouSendIt, to mobile devices, which in turn has blurred the definitions of work and play into one mesh of usage.

Here are some more highlights from the survey:

  • Employees influence file sharing adaptation. It?s recognized that small business employees are more productive when allowed to share files; 74% stated it was adopted to do just that. Sixty-one percent stated that their employees are ?somewhat-to-extremely influential? in determining internal file-sharing solutions.
  • Employers are concerned about its usage. Despite that employers allow employees to use these systems in day-to-day operations, they (44% of respondents) stated that employee sharing of confidential info using unapproved solutions is a concern. Further concerns surrounded malware, loss of confidential/proprietary info, embarrassment, and regulation violations.
  • Files are getting larger. The number of businesses today that share a gigabyte or more of data in their organization is more than twice what it was three years ago (14% as opposed to 6% back then).

Unmanaged file sharing solutions are bad news all around, not just with entrusting its usage to employees whom might not be educated as to the lack of security in these systems (or might not care), but also with product outages. If you use these systems to extensively share info with your customers and/or vendors, you?re looking at a world of trouble if one should go down.

The best solutions to these issues are often the most simplest; Symantec compiled a few, and it doesn?t get much easier than this:

  • Centralization of file storage. Use a secure web-based system that is accessible from points that your SMB solely defines and controls. There are several companies, including Symantec of course, that offer these services.
  • Limit file access. Password-protect or implement other access controls and permissions to keep files safe. ?Adobe Acrobat offers simple document security to prevent opening, printing, copying, or otherwise sharing information in them, for example.
  • Keep an eye out. Maintain an ongoing monitoring of what files are shared, at what time.

If anything, centralizing the control you have over your employees? ability to implement file sharing solutions is the best, biggest step you can take. Don?t leave it in their hands; leave it to the professionals, because it?s your business?s future that depends on it.

Arthritic dog taking swim with owner goes viral: Facebook photo

John Unger and his dog, Schoep, wade in Lake Superior. (Hannah Stonehouse Hudson/StonehousePhoto.com)

A photograph of a 19-year-old arthritic dog taking a relaxing dip in Lake Superior has captured the hearts of millions online. The image was posted to Facebook by photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, who wrote:

"This 19-year-old [Schoep is] being cradled in his father's arms last night in Lake Superior. Schoep falls asleep every night when he is carried into the lake. The buoyancy of the water soothes his arthritic bones. Lake Superior is very warm right now, so the temp of the water is perfect. I was so happy I got to capture this moment for John. By the way, John rescued Schoep as an 8 month old puppy, and he's been by his side through many adventures :)."

The photo, first posted last week, has been viewed more than 2 million times and has received more than 200,000 "likes" from Facebook users.

In the picture, the dog appears to be asleep while being cradled in his owner's arms as the two wade in the lake.

"My specialty is documenting relationships, whether it's a wedding or a man and his dog," Hudson told the Pioneer Press." John lives his life in a kind way. He rescued this dog as a puppy, they have gone everywhere together ever since. Schoep has arthritis now, and John finds that the water is therapeutic. He is the kind of person who wants his animals to be comfortable. I wanted to capture their relationship. I told John, 'I really need to get photos of you and your dog.'"

After a busy week shooting wedding photos, Hudson says she was shocked at how quickly the photograph grew in popularity.

"I never thought that this many people would see the same thing," she told the paper. "I know this is not about me--it's about a guy who loves his dog--but I am in complete awe that my photo has had such an impact."

Hudson is selling prints of the photo, "John & Schoep," on her website and says she'll donate a percentage of the sales to help pay for Schoep's veterinarian bills.
