Erwin Schr?dinger Google Doodle Pays Homage to 'Cat' Experiment

Google is celebrating the 126th birthday of physicist Erwin Schr?dinger with a homepage doodle that channels his well-known thought experiment, dubbed "Schr?dinger's cat."

The doodle turns the Google logo into a mathematical equation, with that famous cat in the center. Depending on how you look at it, the animal could be either dead or alive, a nod to the thought experiment.

As this video explains, the "Schr?dinger's cat" experiment places a cat in a box with a vial of radioactive acid. If even the smallest bit of that substance leaks, or decays, a hammer will break the vial and the cat will die.

"The observer cannot know whether or not an atom of the substance has decayed, and consequently, cannot know whether the vial has been broken, the hydrocyanic acid released, and the cat killed," one explanation holds. "Since we cannot know, according to quantum law, the cat is both dead and alive, in what is called a superposition of states."

Schrodinger Google Doodle

Schr?dinger, however, is also well known for his wave equation. "It came as a result of his dissatisfaction with the quantum condition in Bohr's orbit theory and his belief that atomic spectra should really be determined by some kind of eigenvalue problem," according to the Nobel Prize organization, which awarded him and Paul A.M. Dirac the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933.

As the Nobel organization noted, Schr?dinger was quite the renaissance man, dabbling in painting, botany, grammar, and German poetry over the years before settling into his scientific work. He left Germany after Hitler's rise to power, teaching at Oxford in England, the University of Graz of Austria, the University of Ghent in Belgium, and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Dublin, where he stayed until his retirement in 1955. He then returned to Vienna, where he died in 1961.

For more of Google's doodles, see the slideshow below. Recently, the search giant has honored Rembrandt van Rijn, the Roswell UFO incident, architect Antoni Gaud?, author Maurice Sendak, Julius Richard Petri, graphic designer Saul Bass, Ella Fitzgerald, and Hitchhiker's Guide author Douglas Adams.

Chargers: Te'o has foot sprain, out for week

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te'o will sit out this week with a sprained right foot and miss San Diego's game at Chicago on Thursday.

Te'o wore a walking boot while watching Saturday morning's practice.

"Manti has a foot sprain and he will be out this week and I will give you any further updates as the week goes on, or next week," coach Mike McCoy said. "But he will be out for the week."

The team refused to make Te'o available to reporters, saying he would speak Monday.

McCoy, a rookie head coach, has been loath to share injury news.

When asked how Te'o, a starter who played briefly in Thursday's 31-10 loss to Seattle, sustained the injury, McCoy balked.

"I'm not ... he has a foot sprain," McCoy said. "I will say that and move on from there."

McCoy said the injury was diagnosed after the game.

However, when asked about injuries at Friday's news conference, the coach said: "As of right now, no one has reported any serious injuries from last night. I haven't sat down with our trainer yet, but I will in a little bit."

This is the second time in camp that McCoy's information on injured players has turned out to be less than forthcoming.

On Tuesday, wide receiver Danario Alexander tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in practice, a season-ending injury.

McCoy downplayed the injury after practice. A few hours later, the team announced the severity of the injury.

Now Te'o is out for one game, and maybe longer.

"I think any player is disappointed when they have a little injury that is going to keep him out for a little bit," McCoy said of Te'o's reaction to be sidelined. "But it's part of the game and he will do whatever he can to get back on the field as quickly as possible."

Running back Danny Woodhead missed another practice on Saturday. McCoy wouldn't reveal the injury or Woodhead's anticipated return.

"No, I'm not going to explain, no" McCoy said. "He'll be back on the field when he is ready to go."

Israeli-Palestinian peace talks to resume August 14: U.S.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will resume peace talk in Jerusalem on August 14, the U.S. State Department said on Thursday.

"Negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians will be resuming August 14 in Jerusalem and will be followed by a meeting in Jericho (in the West Bank)," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a briefing.

The sides held their first peace negotiations in nearly three years in Washington on July 30 in U.S.-mediated efforts to end the conflict of more than six decades.

Psaki said U.S. envoys Martin Indyk and Frank Lowenstein will travel to the region to help facilitate the negotiations.

She signaled that no major breakthroughs were likely at the meeting, saying: "Secretary Kerry does not expect to make any announcements in the aftermath of this round of talks."

The announcement came as Israel said it had given preliminary approval for the construction of more than 800 new homes in Jewish settlements on occupied West Bank land, a move that would complicate peace negotiations.

Psaki said Washington had taken up the issue with the Israelis.

"The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued settlement activity and opposes any efforts to legitimize settlement outpost," Psaki said.

"The Secretary has made clear that he believes both the negotiating teams are at the table in good faith and are committed to making progress," she added.

Kerry has said the sides have given themselves about nine months to try to reach an agreement.

The United States is seeking to broker an agreement on a two-state solution, in which Israel would exist peacefully alongside a new Palestinian state created in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, lands partly occupied by Israel since a 1967 war.

The latest direct talks collapsed in late 2010 over Israel's building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

NBC Sports Fight Night results: Curtis Stevens crushes with first round knockout

Curtis Stevens may have stepped up for a fight with Gennady Golovkin tonight, as he waxed Saul Roman in the first round on NBC Sports.

It was a matchup of punchers in the middleweight division, and it closed out the night well on NBC Sports, as Curtis Stevens tore through Saul Roman with ease, knocking him out on a left hook in the first round.

Stevens (25-3, 18 KO) stormed Roman (37-10, 31 KO) right away, hurting him with bombs coming from both hands. As Roman gamely held his ground as best he could, he opened up with a right hand, and Stevens flattened him with a counter left hook. Roman made it back to his feet to fight on, but all he could really do was hold or wing it.

Roman chose to wing it, and the next time he loaded up a right, he found himself flat on his back, victim again to a left hook that crushed his jaw, snapped his head around, and ended the fight immediately.

After the fight, Stevens called his own replays with sound effects and other such flair, and said of the knockout blow that that's exactly how he would catch and stop Gennady Golovkin, too. Golovkin vs Stevens is a floating rumor for November on HBO, when Golovkin is due back to defend his WBA title. If that fight happens, at least we can say that Stevens has a real puncher's chance -- the guy can thump, and he fights fearlessly.

Given the likely options, do you think Stevens is the right opponent for Golovkin in November, and would you give him any chance at the upset?

DirecTV U.S. subscriber losses greater than expected

(Reuters) - Satellite TV provider DirecTV missed second-quarter earnings estimates as it lost more customers than expected in the United States and added fewer than expected in its Latin American unit.

The company reported on Thursday that net income attributable to DirecTV was $660 million, or $1.18 per share, down from $711 billion, or $1.09 share, a year ago. Analysts' average forecast was $1.33 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $7.7 billion.

Analysts on average expected U.S. DirecTV to lose a net 69,500 U.S. subscribers in the quarter, according to StreetAccount, but the losses totaled 84,000.

In Latin America, the greatest driver of its business, it added just 165,000 subscribers, while StreetAccount was looking for 431,900.

NEW YORK (AP) ? After a day of stalled rallies, the stock market closed out July with its best monthly gain since January.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended the month 4.95 percent higher. That's the biggest increase since January, when it rose 5.04 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average also had its best month since January.

Markets surged in July after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke assured investors that the central bank wouldn't pull back on its stimulus program until the economy was strong enough. The central bank is buying $85 billion of bonds a month to keep down interest rates to encourage borrowing and hiring.

On Wednesday, the Fed reaffirmed its commitment to support the economy in a statement released after the end of a two-day meeting. The central bank slightly downgraded its assessment of U.S. economic growth from "moderate" to "modest," suggesting that it's not about to wind down its stimulus.

Given the market's big gains in July, stocks may struggle to climb further in the coming months, said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors.

"I would not be the least bit surprised to see some modest consolidation," said Orlando.

Stocks started higher Wednesday after the government said that the economy grew at a faster pace in the second quarter than economists had forecast.

The gain was mostly gone by the time the Fed statement came out at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The market staged another rally for about an hour after the Fed's announcement, pushing the S&P 500 within two points of breaching the 1,700 level. The market reversed course in the final hour, leaving the S&P flat.

The U.S. grew at an annual rate of 1.7 percent from April through June as businesses spent more and the federal government cut less spending, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Economists had expected growth of 1 percent, according to the data provider FactSet.

There was also an encouraging report on hiring ahead of the government's monthly jobs survey due out Friday.

U.S. businesses created a healthy 200,000 jobs this month, payroll company ADP said, as companies hired at the fastest pace since December. ADP also raised its estimate of the number of jobs the private sector created in June.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended little changed at 1,685.73. The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day 21 points lower, or 0.1 percent, at 15,499.54.

The Nasdaq composite gained 9.90 points, or 0.7 percent, to 3,626.37. The index fell just five times during the month and is at its highest level in more than a decade.

On the bond market, investors anticipated that the Fed's slightly weaker assessment of the economy would imply a longer period of bond purchases. Bond yields fell as demand increased for U.S. government debt. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.58 percent from 2.66 percent just before the announcement.

Investors were also tracking company earnings Wednesday.

Comcast rose $2.37, or 5.5 percent, to $45.08 after the parent company of the NBC network and Universal Studios reported earnings and revenue that exceed analysts' expectations in the second quarter.

Software company Symantec, which makes the Norton antivirus software, surged after the company reported earnings and revenue that beat analysts' forecasts. The stock rose $2.33, or 9.6 percent, to $26.68.

Analysts forecast that second-quarter earnings rose an average of 4.75 percent for S&P 500 companies, according to S&P Capital IQ. That would be the slowest rate of growth in three quarters.

In commodities trading, the price of oil rose $1.95, or 1.9 percent, to $105.03 a barrel. Gold dropped $11.80, or 1 percent, to $1,313 an ounce.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Air Products & Chemicals rose $3.03, or 2.9 percent, to $108.64 after the Wall Street journal reported that activist investor William Ackman had bought a 9.8 percent stake in the gas company.

? Herbalife rose $5.46, or 9.1 percent, to $65.50 after CNBC reported that the veteran hedge fund investor George Soros had taken a stake in the company. Herbalife has been at the center of a battle between Ackman and rival investor Carl Ichan, who are taking opposing positions in the stock.
