The shunned Simpson-Bowles deficit-reduction report is finally getting some love: from both the Obama and Romney camps.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney has been talking up the plan and criticizing President Barack Obama for ignoring it.

Romney told CBS' "Face the Nation" that he agrees with the concept of lowering tax rates and broadening the tax base advocated by the co-chairmen of Obama's deficit commission, Republican Alan Simpson and Democrat Erskine Bowles.

Romney earlier said he thought "very highly" of their recommendations, suggesting some similarity with a House GOP plan authored by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

Romney campaigned with Ryan this week in Wisconsin and with House Speaker John Boehner in Ohio, both of whom opposed the Simpson-Bowles plan.

The Obama campaign responded with a memo noting that, while Obama didn't endorse the Simpson-Bowles findings "in their entirety," his 2013 budget and later economic proposals build on the commission's recommendations.

"Despite his praise for the Simpson-Bowles approach, Romney's plans are fundamentally incompatible with it," wrote James Kvaal, Obama campaign policy director. "Simpson-Bowles would reduce the deficits. The Romney plan would explode them."

There's a reason the Simpson-Bowles plan has been gathering dust on the shelf since December 2010.

It mixes painful cuts to safety-net programs with big tax increases even while cutting top rates on individuals and corporations to 28 percent from 35 percent.

It would hike the Social Security retirement age and scale back popular tax deductions for health insurance and mortgage interest ? toxic proposals for either party in an election year.

Romney, coming off a five-day road trip in which he tried to pull Rust Belt states from Obama's column, had two fundraisers Wednesday in Michigan. Obama had no scheduled public events after an early-morning return from a world leaders' summit in Mexico.

Russia military shipment to Syria halted off UK

While world leaders try to tackle the global debt crisis at the G20 summit in Mexico, all eyes are focusing on relations between President Obama and Russia's Vladimir Putin in the face of the Syria crisis. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Updated at 11:00 a.m. ET: A ship carrying military helicopters and missiles from Russia to Syria was halted off the coast of Scotland on Tuesday after its British insurers canceled the vessel?s cover, prompting it to turn back.

The MV Alaed was carrying weapons and Mi25 helicopters from the Russian port of Kaliningrad, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The vessel has been closely monitored by intelligence agencies since Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week said such shipments were adding to the arsenal of weaponry available in Syria, which has spiraled into civil war.

Britain's Foreign Office said no?physical intervention had been made to prevent the ship's progress. However, Foreign Secretary William Hague told lawmakers on Tuesday that the vessel had?"turned back now apparently toward Russia."?That could not be independently verified as the ship appeared to have turned off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) equipment in the early hours of Monday.

Clinton last week said ?Moscow had "dramatically" escalated the crisis in Syria by sending attack helicopters there. The State Department acknowledged later the helicopters she accused Moscow of sending were actually refurbished ones already owned by the Assad regime, but Russia was clearly annoyed, and the spat further fueled tensions between the two countries over Syria.?It was not immediately clear whether the helicopters aboard the MV Alaed were the ones to which Clinton had been referring.?

The British marine insurer, Standard Club, said it had withdrawn cover from the ship?s owner, Femco, a Russian cargo line.?

Arms shipments from Russia to Syria are not prohibited by the United Nations because attempts to impose sanctions have been vetoed by allies of Damascus, including Moscow.

However, a European Union arms embargo outlaws the "transfer or export" of arms and any related "brokering" services such as insurance to Syria by EU members, including Britain.

"We were made aware of the allegations that the Alaed was carrying munitions destined for Syria," the company said in a statement. "We have already informed the ship owner that their insurance cover ceased automatically in view of the nature of the voyage."?

?Having its insurance withdrawn will be a problem for the MV Alaed," said Liz McMahon, senior reporter on insurance for maritime specialist, Lloyd's List. "It could make entering other ports difficult."

The Soviet-era helicopters onboard MV Alaed were returning to Syria after being sent to their Russian manufacturer, Mil, for servicing and repairs, the Telegraph reported.

NBC News first reported last week that Russia is preparing to send troops to Syria in the event that it needs to protect personnel and remove equipment from its naval facility in the Mediterranean port of Tartus.

Syria is Moscow's firmest foothold in the Middle East and buys weapons from Russia worth billions of dollars. It also hosts the Russian navy's only permanent warm-water port outside the former Soviet Union.

Russia has used its U.N. Security Council veto to dilute Western efforts to condemn Syrian President Bashar Assad and secure his exit from power, arguing that deposing a government using external pressure is unacceptable.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? A shallow avalanche on Alaska's Mount McKinley may not have killed four Japanese climbers, but the slide pushed them into a crevasse more than 100 feet deep, the National Park Service said Sunday.

Spokeswoman Kris Fister said Sunday that the search for the climbers was permanently suspended after a mountaineering ranger found the climbing rope in debris at the bottom of the crevasse.

"We believe this is their final resting place," Fister said.

Yoshiaki Kato, 64, Masako Suda, 50, Michiko Suzuki 56, and 63-year-old Tamao Suzuki, 63, are missing and presumed dead.

The avalanche early Wednesday morning also pushed Hitoshi Ogi, 69, into the crevasse. Ogi climbed 60 feet out of the crevasse and reached a base camp Thursday.

Ogi had been attached to the other members of the team by climbing rope as they descended in an avalanche-prone section of the West Buttress Route. The rope broke in the avalanche and fall.

The group was on a section known as Motorcycle Hill at about 11,800 feet, which has a 35-degee slope. Climbers who take a required briefing on the mountain are warned of the avalanche danger there.

"This is the first time there have been fatalities," Fister said.

The avalanche, likely caused by new snow falling on rock or hardened snow and ice, measured 200 feet wide and 800 feet top to bottom, Fisher said. It created a snow pile averaging only 3-4 feet deep.

A 10-person ground crew searched for the climbers Saturday. The patrol included a rescue dog and a handler. The crew probed the avalanche debris zone and found no sign of the missing climbers.

Park Service mountaineering ranger Tucker Chenoweth, however, found grim signs of the doomed climbing team in the crevasse below where Ogi had fallen.

He descended about 100 feet, and while probing through debris, found the other end of Ogi's rope. He continued to dig but found compacted ice and snow debris.

The danger of falling ice made it too dangerous to continue an attempt to recover bodies, Fister said.

All the climbers were members of the Japanese alpine club Miyagi Workers Alpine Federation.

Ogi suffered a minor hand injury, according to the Park Service. He was flown off the mountain Thursday.
