Lane, 17, admitted taking a .22-caliber pistol to Chardon High School along with a knife and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table Monday morning, Prosecutor David Joyce said. Three of the five students wounded in the attacks have since died. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

(AP) ? The 17-year-old suspect in a deadly shooting rampage at an Ohio high school appeared briefly in juvenile court as residents of the shaken community offered sympathy and support for families and friends of the three students who were killed and two who were wounded.

A prosecutor described suspect T.J. Lane as "someone who's not well" and said the teen didn't know the victims but chose them randomly.

Lane admitted taking a .22-caliber pistol and a knife to the 1,100-student Chardon High School and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table Monday morning, prosecutor David Joyce said.

Authorities offered their own condolences Tuesday and shared a nugget of welcome news, announcing that an 18-year-old girl who was hurt in the shootings had been released from the hospital and was home with family. The second injured teen remained in serious condition at a suburban Cleveland hospital.

Those trying to understand what prompted the shootings got few answers from the court hearing, which came hours after the death toll rose to three.

Lane, a thin young man described by other students as extremely quiet, spoke little in court, where a judge ordered him held for at least 15 days.

Lane's grandfather, who has custody of the teenager, and two aunts joined him in court. The women lightly embraced the older man as the hearing began.

Prosecutors have until Thursday to bring charges and are expected to ask that Lane be tried as an adult. He will probably be charged with three counts of aggravated murder and other offenses, Joyce said.

The prosecutor appeared to rule out rumors and speculation that the young gunman lashed out after being bullied or that the shooting had something to do with drug-dealing.

"This is not about bullying. This is not about drugs," Joyce said. "This is someone who's not well, and I'm sure in our court case we'll prove that to all of your desires and we'll make sure justice is done here in this county."

Joyce would not elaborate. Both sides in the case are under a gag order imposed by the judge at the prosecutor's request.

The judge also barred media outlets from taking photos of the faces of the suspect and some of his relatives. The Associated Press transmitted photos and video of Lane that were shot before the hearing. The AP and at least one other media outlet, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, plan to challenge the judge's order Wednesday.

Meanwhile, area schools offered grief counseling to students, staff and others shocked by the rampage.

"We're not just any old place, Chardon," Chardon School Superintendent Joseph Bergant II said. "This is every place. As you've seen in the past, this can happen anywhere, proof of what we had yesterday."

Authorities said Tuesday that Demetrius Hewlin, 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, had died from their injuries. Daniel Parmertor, 16, died shortly after the shooting.

Hewlin attended Chardon High. King and Parmertor were students at the Auburn Career Center, a vocational school, and were waiting in the Chardon High cafeteria for their daily bus when they were shot.

Lane's family is mourning "this terrible loss for their community," Lane's attorney, Robert Farinacci, said in a statement.

Fifteen-year-old Danny Komertz, who witnessed the shooting, said it appeared that the gunman singled out a group of students sitting together. He said Lane was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied. But other students disputed that.

Farinacci told WKYC-TV that Lane "pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and has never been in trouble over anything that we know about."

Lane did not attend Chardon High but waited there for the bus to Lake Academy, a school for students with academic or behavioral problems. Authorities would not say how and why he ended up at Lake Academy.

Student Nate Mueller said he was at the cafeteria table where the victims were shot, and a bullet grazed his ear. Mueller told The Plain Dealer that King ? one of those killed ? had recently started dating Lane's ex-girlfriend.

Lane "was silent the whole time," Mueller said. "That's what made it so random."

Kala Day, 18, said she rode the morning school bus with Lane and knew the victims.

"He always sat by himself and, like, looked out the window. So I sat with him a few times, because I felt bad for the kid," she said. "He didn't talk. He just stared out the window."

The shooting sent students screaming from the building in panic, and some of that chaos and fear was captured in 911 recordings released Tuesday.

"We just had a shooting at our school. We need to get out of here. Oh, my god," one crying female caller told a dispatcher.

"Everyone's running away," the caller added.

Another caller, a male student, instantly identified the gunman as Thomas Lane, a student, and said he appeared to be shooting at random.

"What was his beef with these kids? Do we know?" the dispatcher asked.

"I have no idea," he said, adding: "He's very quiet and he doesn't really talk to anyone."

Frank Hall, an assistant high school football coach who has been hailed as a hero by students who say he chased the gunman out of the cafeteria, told a Cleveland TV station that he couldn't discuss what happened, but added: "I wish I could have done more."

When Humor Meets History: Dick Gregory | Grand Central Magazine

Comedian Dick Gregory stands with CMU student, Jasmine Smith (Photo submitted by Jasmine Smith)

Civil rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory gave his humorous commentary in front of Central Michigan University students and faculty on Tuesday in Plachta hall.

Being introduced with a foreword from President George Ross, Gregory made it a point to acknowledge the many ?invisible? people behind the scenes of his appearance for the evening.? Gregory thanked the stage crewmembers, drivers, and others involved with the show as he expressed his gratitude for being invited back after appearing at CMU 23 years ago.

?We?ve left you a mess to clean up,? Gregory said.

The statement was one that he would announce repeatedly throughout the course of his speech, admitting that his generation has provided very a chaotic foundation for the current generation to make due with.

With his experience working side by side with the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Gregory recalled many moments of turmoil and progression during the civil rights movement as well as moving forward from it in his fight for equality.

Sitting on his stool facing the crowd, Gregory mixed his comedic material with the general seriousness of his message to be conveyed.

?White ain?t got nothing to do with the color, it?s about the attitude,? Gregory said.

Gregory poked fun at both groups, including various gags at white and black people. He pointed out major differences that are analyzed heavily, while highlighting (in the several aspects) what makes them similar.

?There are white folks problems, and there are black folks problems,? Gregory said. ?The only difference is, white people are lucky, because we wish we had their problems.?

Gregory says that it is all about kindness and politeness, and when asked if he agreed with the idea that African Americans are still ?on the plantation,? he quickly agreed.

?You?re absolutely right we are,? Gregory said. ?Not physically, of course not, but the difference is that today if a black man got lynched, they?d be surprised by it.?

He believes that the generation as a whole is afraid to fight, and he apologizes for that. Gregory says it is his responsibility to give information ? believing that power is not in money or an education, but in good information.

In the spirit of providing such information to offer a sense of power, Gregory concluded the evening with one statement: ?Give me an army that?s willing to die, and it can defeat an army willing to kill.?

WikiLeaks publishes intelligence firm's emails

The anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks began publishing on Monday more than five million emails from a U.S.-based global security analysis company that has been likened to a shadow CIA.

The emails, snatched by hackers, could unmask sensitive sources and throw light on the murky world of intelligence-gathering by the company known as Stratfor, which counts Fortune 500 companies among its subscribers.

In a statement shortly after midnight ET, Straford said the release of its stolen emails was an attempt to silence and intimidate it.

"The release of these emails is a direct attack on Stratfor," the statement said. "This is another attempt to silence and intimidate the company, and one we reject."

Anonymous attacks alarming, top security adviser says

It said it would not be cowed under the leadership of George Friedman, Stratfor's founder and chief executive officer. It said Friedman had not resigned as CEO, contrary to a bogus email circulating on the Internet.

'We will not be victimized twice'
Some of the emails being published "may be forged or altered to include inaccuracies; some may be authentic," the company statement said.

"We will not validate either. Nor will we explain the thinking that went into them. Having had our property stolen, we will not be victimized twice by submitting to questioning about them," the statement said.

WikiLeaks did not say how it had acquired access to the vast haul of internal and external correspondence of the Austin, Texas company, formally known as Strategic Forecasting Inc.

Anonymous hackers target US security think tank

Hackers linked to the loosely organized Anonymous hackers group said at the beginning of the year they had stolen the email correspondence of some 100 of the firm's employees. The group said it planned to publish the data so the public would know the "truth" about Stratfor operations.

Video: Stratfor Back Online After Hack (on this page)

Stratfor describes itself as a subscription-based publisher of geopolitical analysis with an intelligence-based approach to gathering information.

WikiLeaks and Anonymous maintain the emails will expose dark secrets about the company. Stratfor said in its statement it had worked hard to build "good sources" in many countries, "as any publisher of global geopolitical analysis would do."

In December, hackers broke into Stratfor's data systems and stole a large number of company emails.

Stratfor hackers publish email, password data

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told Reuters: "Here we have a private intelligence firm, relying on informants from the U.S. government, foreign intelligence agencies with questionable reputations and journalists."

"What is of grave concern is that the targets of this scrutiny are, among others, activist organizations fighting for a just cause."

Video: Bradley Manning's lawyers: DADT shares blame (on this page)

Friedman, the chief executive, said on Jan. 11 the thieves would be hard pressed to find anything significant in the stolen emails.

"God knows what a hundred employees writing endless emails might say that is embarrassing, stupid or subject to misinterpretation. ... As they search our emails for signs of a vast conspiracy, they will be disappointed."

NYT: Failed Vatican attack sheds light on Anonymous

People linked to Anonymous took credit for the data theft. "Congrats on the amazing partnership between #Anonymous and #WikiLeaks to make all 5 million mails public," AnonSec Tweeted. AnonSec is one of several Twitter accounts used to promote and organize activities associated with Anonymous.

It was not immediately clear what impact the release of the emails might have on Stratfor, its employees, clients and information sources.

Previous releases from WikiLeaks, such as secret video battle footage and thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in 2010 have angered the U.S. government. WikiLeaks' disclosures also have raised questions about the safety of confidential sources quoted in previously secret documents.

Media partners
WikiLeaks said it was working with two dozen media organizations worldwide that have access to a database of the Stratfor emails. These include the U.S. newspaper publisher McClatchy Co. So far, however, only a small selection of the Stratfor emails appear to have been published to WikiLeaks' website.

"We have begun reviewing the emails and will publish as warranted," McClatchy's Washington bureau chief, James Asher, told Reuters.

Video: Wikileaks' Assange can be extradited to Sweden (on this page)

WikiLeaks said its other media partners include L'Espresso and La Repubblica newspapers in Italy, the NDR/ARD state broadcaster in Germany and Russia Reporter.

The group gave a sneak preview of the emails to The Yes Men, an activist group that targets what it views as corporate greed.

The Stratfor emails discuss an elaborate hoax the group staged to criticize Dow Chemical Co's handling of the Bhopal chemical disaster in India, according to Andy Bichlbaum, one of The Yes Men.

"What is significant is the picture it helps to paint of the way corporations operate," Bichlbaum told Reuters. "They operate with complete disregard for rule of law and human decency."

After Stratfor's computers were hacked at least twice last December, the credit card details of more than 30,000 subscribers to Stratfor publications were posted on the Internet, including those of former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger and former U.S. vice president Dan Quayle.

The FBI began investigating the matter in December.

Australian-born Assange, 40, is currently under house arrest in Britain and fighting extradition to Sweden for questioning over alleged sex crimes.

Re: FTM 2012: Understanding 'Places' - Family Tree Maker software ...

SassKwatch,

No offense taken. :-)

First, please be aware that the terms that FTM uses, such as "fact" and "shared fact" are not genealogical terms per se, they are FTM terms.

You said: "The lack of a citable 'Residency Certificate' (or some piece of legalese equivalent to a 'marriage certificate') doesn't change that fact"

But there is a certificate that you can use in some cases. A census. If a census was taken and you were found to live at a location then you could call that a "fact" (or and event) and make it sharable. FTM however does not allow for you to enter this information once and share it between multiple individuals in your tree, this is a limitation of FTM not genealogy. Other software products do support this concept. These software products say they are "event/fact driven".

Second, you make a great point when you say that in one instance your family lived at a place together from 1976 to 1979. But also many times people of one family unit live in the same house for differing spans of time.

For example.

John and Jane bought a house in 1957.
Bill was born in 1958 and Mary was born in 1960
Bill went to college and never return in 1978
Jane divorced John in 1979 and John move out.
Mary went to college in 1980 returned home in 1984 and married, leaving home in 1986.

You could not enter one shared residence for any of these family members that shows the correct residency time span. So a share fact or event could not be used.

Demon Crew Review: The voice of sport

As the DMU website rightly states, it's a privilege to have Hugh McIlvanney, the only sportswriter to be named Britain's Journalist of the Year, coming to speak during Cultural eXchanges week.

At 78, he is still writing for The Sunday Times and is widely renowned among his peers as the greatest sports journalist of all time. Famous for his reporting of the classic 'Rumble In The Jungle' between Muhammad Ali and George Forman in 1974, his touching tribute to his great friend George Best and his biography of Sir Alex Ferguson, he really is the king of sports journalism.

Hugh will be speaking to DMU's Dick Holt on his extraodinary career on Tuesday 28th February at 5.30pm and I would recommend any aspiring sports journalists or fans to attend. Tickets can be bought here.
